The Outdoor Youth Work

Training Course

16-22 April 2026 | Grenoble, France

This training course aims to bring together 24 youth workers from different geographic and cultural contexts in order to explore how to integrate the outdoors into their everyday youth work, regardless of whether they work in city centers or rural areas.

Context

In an increasingly digitized world, the disconnect between youth and their environment affects both their mental well-being and their learning capacity. Our goal is to provide participants with the confidence to use the outdoors as a structured, creative learning space. We aim to explore educational methods where nature becomes a tool for inclusion, offering low-cost solutions that support the physical and mental health of young people.

Goal

This training course is designed for youth workers and non-formal learning practitioners who want to transform the outdoors into an accessible educational tool, whether they operate in bustling urban centers or isolated rural communities. The program starts from the premise that nature-based education does not require specialized trekking gear or remote wilderness, but can be successfully practiced in local parks or any immediate green space.

Program

During the seven days in Grenoble, participants will undergo an intensive experiential learning process:

  • Context Mapping: Comparing challenges in urban versus rural youth work and deconstructing the idea that nature is a distant destination.
  • European Competences: Aligning personal practice with the European Training Strategy (ETS) and its nine competence areas.
  • Methodology: Experimenting with the five pathways to nature connection and analyzing the six core principles of safety and ethics (safety, peer support, collaboration, empowerment, transparency, and cultural awareness).
  • Creative Kitchen: Participants will design and deliver their own outdoor workshops, receiving direct feedback to refine their facilitation techniques.

Results and Impact

By the end of the course, every participant will have a clear, personal roadmap for integrating outdoor activities into their regular work. Together, we will produce a digital handbook featuring practical, minimal-resource activities ready for implementation in home organizations. Participants will join an international network of professionals empowered to guide youth toward a deeper sense of belonging in their local environment.
