Why invent from scratch when the best games already exist?

We turn modern board games—rich in strategy, communication, and creativity—into powerful tools for youth learning. Discover how these engaging worlds connect with youth workers’ competences and spark alternative learning experiences.

Join us to play, learn, and change the game in youth work – join us for “Volu.M.E. Series – The Game Changer: From Board Games to Learning in Youth Work.”

Turn a Game into Learning

Why reinvent the wheel when the world of board games already offers an incredible toolbox for learning, reflection, and growth?

In this edition of the Volu.M.E. (Volunteering. Motivation. Empowerment.) Series, The Game Changer invites youth workers, educators, and facilitators to explore how modern board games can become powerful educational tools in youth work. The focus will be on the development of competences for youth workers engaged in working with young people.

Instead of building new games from scratch, we will dive into the rich universe of professionally designed, beautifully crafted, and deeply engaging board games. These systems are built on rules, strategy, communication, and creativity—designed to challenge minds and foster connection.

Together, we will explore:

  • How existing games can be reframed as tools for competence development and experiential learning, including exploration of the ETS Competence Model for Youth Workers Working Internationally
  • How to design meaningful learning experiences through play
  • How to use games to build teamwork, problem-solving, and social skills among young people

Questions guiding and supporting our learning process will include:

  • What is a competence-based approach, and what does it have to do with games?
  • What can we learn from a game about our own competences?

Costs

Participation fee

We are aware of the difficult financial situation faced by many people active in the field. Nevertheless, we consider the offered events to be a high-quality experience in terms of venues, tools, and activities, and therefore a unique opportunity for personal learning, professional development, and networking. For this reason, and beyond the funding received from European taxpayers, the events are not intended to be “for free.”

Furthermore, as providers of civic education—also focusing on topics such as (global) social justice—we have decided to disrupt the vicious cycle of underpayment affecting people active in the field of (international) youth work and education. These are individuals who dedicate their time, energy, and expertise to creating high-quality learning experiences. We therefore commit to offering fair remuneration for their work (e.g. freelance trainers, facilitators, or support staff).

For these reasons, a financial contribution from each participant is required, based on individual situation and self-assessment:

  • You are, for example, a student, unemployed person, or volunteer without personal income (reduced fee): 50.00 EUR
  • You are, for example, a freelance youth worker, trainer, or educator with your own income (regular fee): 75.00 EUR
  • You are, for example, a person in stable employment (solidarity fee): 100.00 EUR
