Spray in Unity

Training Course

19-29 April 2022 | Den Haag, Netherlands

Spray in Unity learns participants to use street art as method to express thoughts & beliefs about the topic of integration. The training is facilitated by skilled street art trainers and registrations are now open to participants from the Netherlands.

Objectives
Thig training course aims to enable youth workers to organize activities around complex and sensitive societal matters using street art as an instrument. Integration is the central topic of this training course, but the competences developed by participants can be applied more generally after the project. Further, the training course aims to help stimulate a positive dialogue about integration & migration and counter polarizing views on the topic in the communities where participants are from.

Approach
During this 9-day training course, participants learn from and with each other through a variety of
methods and in an intercultural setting. The training roughly consists of the following elements:

  • Bonding with each other through team building activities whilst learning to understand and appreciate what street art is all about and what is its potential for societal change.
  • Familiarizing with the basic street art skills and techniques.
  • Developing views on integration (including an international and intercultural point of view), by engaging with each other and with local residents with a migrant background.
  • Expressing thoughts, views and stories on integration through street art and develop ideas for a street art mural in Den Haag in groups of participants.
  • Participants making their own mural in the borough “Centre” in Den Haag.
  • Developing training materials for future activities spurred by the knowledge and competences gained during the training.

Participants
The training course is open for (aspiring) youth workers to join. In total 21 there are participants, 7
from each of the three countries involved. We are looking for participants who have no prior
experience in street art, but are just motivated to use it as a method in their activities for youth.
After the training course, participants:

  • Have learned about migration and integration from an international and intercultural point of view, by engaging with youth workers from other countries and backgrounds.
  • Have developed competences to use street art in their own future activities for youth. This includes the ability to design and implement original, playful and educational activities which can facilitate the theme of street art.
  • Can apply newly gained methods and competences related to stimulating a constructive dialogue among youth groups in their youth activities, notably non-violent communication techniques, conflict resolution methods, mediation and negotiation techniques, and intercultural competences.

A participation fee of maximally 30 euros per person is asked for the whole training course. Travels, accommodation and food are fully covered.
