Rethinking Autism: Revolutionising Youth Work for Neurodiverse Young People
Study Visit
28 January - 1 February 2024 | Donegal , Ireland
The study visit is focused on supporting professionals in better understanding and enhancing the experiences of young people with autism within youth work environment.
The main goal is to investigate the effectiveness of the social model approach applied into activities designed with need of the mentioned group on mind, and delivered in an inclusive and non-biased way. Both formal and non-formal research methods will be used. An international angle of the visit will allow the participants to exchange their professional experience and gain new valuable knowledge and methods of work with the young people on the autism spectrum.
Aim of the study visit
- To promote the social model approach to youth work, ensuring that more young people with autism can be included in various groups and clubs
Throughout the visit different innovative methods of addressing the topic will be used
- Group workshops that explore using art as a way to communicate
- Lego based activities
- Peer learning during group discussions on personal experiences in this area
- Q&A session with parents of young people with autism that have been attending a social group within Donegal Youth Service
- A site visit to a local education provider
- An opportunity to attend Donegal Youth Services "Our Group" which is a social group for young people with autism
A visit to Glenveagh National park will also be arranged for participants of the study visit.
The expected outcome is that youth workers will leave the program better equipped to support and work effectively with individuals on the autism spectrum. Additionally, the visit will go along with two out of the 11 European Youth Goals: #9 Space and Participation for All, and #3 Inclusive Societies that summarise the issues affecting young people in Europe and the political priorities that are important to them.

Donegal Youth Service (Others)
Donegal Youth Service (DYS) is a countywide Youth Service Provider, a Company Limited by Guarantee and a registered Charity with Charitable Status.
Donegal Youth Service is an affiliate member of Youth Work Ireland (one of 22 Member Services nationally). Our work sees us regularly involved in projects and initiatives at a national and international level.
DYS manages youth projects which are set up to address specific needs of young people aged 10 – 25yrs. DYS operates an integrated youth service model to deliver better outcomes for young people through an intentional youth work practice intervention.
DYS operates an integrated youth service model, meaning that the youth work staff work to ensure that young people can move seamlessly from project to project dependent on their needs. This approach means that the young person is at the center of the service and there is ‘no wrong door approach’ so that a holistic approach is taken linking the young person to the appropriate project or intervention.
DYS operates under the definition of Youth Work as set out in the Youth Work Act 201, which is defined as ‘a planned programme of education designed for the purpose of aiding and enhancing the personal and social development of young persons through their voluntary participation, and which is: complementary to their formal, academic or vocational education
and training; and provided primarily by voluntary organisations..

Costs
Participation fee
There is no participation fee. The whole project is funded by Erasmus+ programme.
Accommodation and food
Accomodation and food covered by the Erasmus+ programme for the selected participants.
Travel reimbursement
The participants will be reimbursed for their travel expenses TO and FROM Ireland according to the Erasmus+ funding rules / distance calculator
