PUPPETRYLY

Training Course

14-25 October 2024 | France

Puppetryly is a puppetry workshop in October 2024, focusing on puppet construction, manipulation, and performance. It aims to use puppetry for social mediation, enhancing communication, and fostering European social cohesion.

Puppetryly is an Erasmus+ training course focused on the art of puppetry. Its aim is to identify the mediation challenges that puppetry can address and to practice the tools it offers for this purpose. It is also an opportunity to explore how this art form serves as a means to foster more serene and socially cohesive interactions.

The program is scheduled from October 14 to 25, 2024, and will unfold in three phases:

Appreciation: Participants will watch the show Aubry by Cie des MarMalins, followed by its critique and analysis to establish an initial connection with the week’s theme.

Creation: Participants will construct their own puppets.

Performance: Participants will manipulate and perform with their puppets.

Through puppetry, we express ourselves on whimsical and dreamlike subjects, as well as more sensitive and difficult topics. The puppet serves as a medium to distance ourselves from communication barriers, allowing us to navigate and understand these often sensitive exchanges. Playing with the puppet remains in the realm of fantasy: our desires are active and we control them, but they have no consequences.

The puppet has the power to convey what we wish to express but cannot articulate alone. It can "stand in" for who we want to be when it is too difficult to assume that role ourselves. It facilitates conversations on delicate subjects, enabling exchange and collaboration, emotional openness, and relational connections. Puppetry is, therefore, a powerful social mediator and an excellent communication tool for audiences of all ages. Its strength lies in creating bridges between us and the world.

We are in a complex period, both politically and health-wise. Social tensions are palpable throughout Europe, and in some areas, communication has broken down, leading to armed conflicts. It is more necessary than ever for us, as European citizens, to find and share means of action to enable us to exchange, share, communicate, and progress together in a calm and constructive manner. We must position ourselves as major actors in Europe through the sharing of knowledge, education, culture, creativity, inclusion, and mobility.

The objectives of this training are:

  • To learn the techniques of puppet theater, including construction, manipulation, and the creation of scenes.
  • To transform knowledge into mediation and communication tools.
  • To create inter-European social cohesion.
  • To encourage participants to reflect on their role as European citizens.
  • To consider the training objectives on a European scale, raising participants' awareness of our common problems and needs within the European Union
