Preparatory training for workcamp coordinators in Germany

Training Course

28 May - 2 June 2025 | Bad Nauheim bei Frankfurt/M., Germany

Every year we are looking for committed volunteers to accompany our international workcamps in Germany as camp leaders. You will be prepared for this task in one of our preparatory courses.

Every year, Service Civil International - German Branch* (SCI-D) is looking for coordinators for our international workcamps in the summer. This call addresses engaged young people who agree to participate in a preparatory seminar and are interested to coordinate one or more workcamps with SCI.

The call is open for young people from the EU and neighbouring countries.

What is a workcamp?

Our workcamps are short-term volunteer programmes (2-3 weeks) for active people from all over the world on various topics related to social justice, peacebuilding, equality, remembrance, etc., at various locations in Germany.

The SCI workcamps place great emphasis on community, mutual respect, self-organisation, recognition of diversity and peaceful coexistence. These values are also central to our seminars.

General information on workcamp coordination

As a workcamp coordinator, you will accompany an international group of 6 to 15 volunteers on a two- to three-week workcamp in Germany. You will support the group dynamics and dialogue within the group.

You don't have to be perfect: coordinating a workcamp means trying things out, getting involved, and possibly lowering your expectations of yourself and others. You can gain a lot!

You have the opportunity to

  • face a personal challenge and take on responsibility,
  • help shape the content of the workcamp,
  • contribute and develop your creativity and organisational skills,
  • to promote the initiative and self-organisation of the volunteer group,
  • work on a project with international volunteers and
  • improve your language skills.

It is a benefit, but not a must, if workcamp coordinators have sufficient knowledge of German language, as not all our local project partners speak English. If you already speak German, the choice of workcamps will be bigger for you.

The course

The course is prepared and moderated by the SCI education working group and a manager from the SCI-D office. In addition to conveying the content, great importance is attached to the group process and working together in solidarity.

The courses are held in English, as english is a precondition for the workcamp coordination. Knowledge of German is beneficial.

Course topics include the role and tasks of a workcamp coordinator in SCI, community building, diversity, constructive conflict resolution, self-organisation, sustainability, SCI history, creative techniques and great methods for group work. And of course having lots of fun and going into depth.

The programme starts on the first day around 6pm with the joint preparation of dinner, and ends on the last day around 2pm after lunch.

The group will be accommodated in simple multi-bed rooms and will be self-catering.
