PlaceOut! is launching an exceptional series of trainings and webinars on Space Regeneration in Non-Urban Areas Designed for Young people, Youth Grassroots Organizations and Local Institutions

Revitalising Rural Spaces: Learning Opportunities for Youth living in Rural Areas

Abandoned, unused or underutilised buildings are a common feature of EU rural areas. Empty squares, disused schools or factories, unused fields – reminders of the past centrality of these territories in EU history – not only can negatively impact the quality of life for citizens and the attractiveness of the territory: they represent untapped potential and missed opportunities for local communities.

Instead of remaining dormant and draining communities, Europe showcases inspiring transformations where these spaces have become pivots of positive change. Deserted buildings are reborn as bustling community centers, hosting events and workshops that revive social interaction and cultural vibrancy; Creative hubs blossom with artistic expression, attracting tourism and enhancing the territory’s cultural identity; Public spaces are reimagined as recreational areas, with parks, playgrounds, and green spaces promoting physical and mental well-being. These are just a few examples of the diverse ways communities across Europe are breathing new life into their forgotten spaces.

Those experiences show that regenerating an abandoned space does not only require a good idea: it requires method, competencies, and funding, making an organization capable of effectively carrying out the revitalisation and management of a rural space.
