Mental Health Issues Arising from Covid-19

Training Course

12-16 September 2022 | Sleen, Netherlands

Concretely the objectives of the project are to : 1) Capacitate youth workers working with young people from disadvantaged backgrounds on managing post traumatic stress disorders as a result of the pandemic.

The unprecedented nature of Covid-19 left youths with numerous psychological scars stemming from loneliness, mental insecurities, fatigue and despair as a result of confinement. There is need therefore to have a project that debrief the youth and youth workers as well as give them a platform to share their stories so that society is better equipped and prepared to face future calamities of this nature.

The psychological, economic, social and physical destruction caused by the Covid-19 virus has been unprecedented and there is need for youths to come together and debrief. It is important for youths to be able to share their experiences and motivate each other to move on with a positive mindset.

The project also focusses on young people from disadvantaged backgrounds because research has shown that those from minority backgrounds are more likely to suffer from the brunt of mental health due to their inadequacy to seek professional remedy for their situations.

The youth workers activity will have a positive impact on the participants` daily work with young people through the multiplier effect. The project is expected to amplify the work and interventions in addressing mental health at the grassroot level.

The youth workers are expected to implement the outcomes from the training in their programming. They will enhance youths` understanding of mental health, depression, suicide, self-harm and radicalization. The outputs from the MHIAC youth mobility will inform the youth workers on how to address issues that youths` in their communities can be suffering from
in silence. They will gain skills and competences in peer-peer mentorship, safeguarding, human rights ideals, compassionate understanding and empathy skills. They will use these skills upon their return to their countries to mentor and advise depressed youths on courses of action to take when faced with mental health challenges.
