Leaving the comfort zone: How to motivate young Europeans to participate in an intercultural experience?

Partnership-building Activity

18-20 January 2024 | Europäische Akademie Otzenhausen, Germany

How can we prepare young people for an intercultural experience? The training, aimed at teachers and youth workers, seeks to foster a solution-oriented exchange on these questions, through best-practice examples and networking activities.

A united Europe thrives on exchange and understanding between its citizens.

This, however, requires our willingness to look beyond our own horizons, in order to better understand each other. Especially young people are required to do so, because they represent Europe’s future.

A first stay abroad through a school exchange or the participation in an intercultural youth encounter can be conducive for this. However, for some young persons, leaving the own comfort zone is not that easy!

How can we motivate young people to jump over their own shadow in order to live such enriching intercultural experiences? How can we help them to take their future into their own hands?

This event organized at the Europäische Akademie Otzenhausen (Germany) is aimed at teachers and at youth work professionals from all over Europe, who would like to exchange ideas and best-practice examples about exactly these questions. The meeting further offers the opportunity to jointly develop and test methods, that can later be used to motivate and prepare young people for an intercultural experience.

The meeting also offers insights into best-practice methods of the Europäische Akademie Otzenhausen and gives participants the opportunity to broaden their network in the field of formal and non-formal education across Europe.

The Europäische Akademie Otzenhausen is an independent provider of extracurricular youth and adult education. As a non-partisan and non-denominational organization, it addresses people from all social groups with a minimum age of 16 years.
Our vision is a lively European civil society in which citizens take responsibility for themselves and the community.

Our goals are:
- To promote a peaceful and united Europe based on commonly defined values.
- To enable and encourage as many citizens as possible for social and political participation.
- To initiate and support discourses on central controversies of society.
- To shape political culture on the basis of democracy and shared values.
- To shape a climate-friendly and sustainable society.

Intercultural youth work is the main focus of our activities. We are convinced that young people can best benefit from exploring new spaces, changing perspectives and broadening their own horizons.
Although our projects and youth encounters fall into the field of extracurricular education, they can't be seen in isolation from school learning but rather as an integral part of a general learning process. For this reason, we are particularly interested in cooperation between actors involved in school education and non-school education.
