Humour is Serious Business

Training Course

27 November - 3 December 2026 | Hollókő, Hungary

Turning humour into a deliberate, ethical tool for engaging young people more effectively. Non-formal methods, cultural reflection on humour, and concrete post-programme actions to bring back to your practice.

Humour is already present in youth work practice - but it's rarely used as a deliberate, structured tool. "Humour is Serious Business" (HiSB) is a 6-day Erasmus+ KA153-YOU training course (27 November - 3 December 2026, Hollókő, Hungary) that will help you turn something you probably already do instinctively into an intentional, ethical, and effective competence for engaging young people.

This training is aimed specifically at practitioners in the field of non-formal learning and youth work - not at the general public. You should apply if you are a youth worker (professional or voluntary), a youth leader, a young person (18+) with leadership potential already identified by your organisation, or a practitioner with relevant expertise who works with young people (e.g. a coach, mentor or tutor), even if youth work is not your primary profession.

Through non-formal methods - World Café, simulations and role play, clowning and improvisation, team building, and daily reflection groups - you will explore the many different types of humour, examine cultural differences in how humour is used, reflect on your own sense of humour, and develop concrete post-programme actions to bring back to your own community. Every participant leaves with a Personal Development Plan and the chance to earn a Youthpass.

HiSB is delivered by an experienced international Training Team and hosted by MAVISZ (Hungary), together with partner organisations in Poland, Portugal, Armenia, Serbia, Latvia, Croatia, Montenegro and Spain. 36 participants will take part, 4 per sending country.

Full details, including the daily programme, participant support structure, and reimbursement process, are in the Info Pack: https://mavisz.my.canva.site/hisb2026

The foundation holds observer status within the Eurodesk network and has supported the delivery of Erasmus+ youth projects, including providing methodological support to the PLAYADR project. Locally, MAVISZ runs informal and non-formal learning activities engaging young people - including those from disadvantaged backgrounds - across Budapest's inner districts.
