HATE-LESS Train the Trainer (1/4): Storytelling Through Space - Using Your Location as Your Ideal Participatory Video Background

Training Course

7 May 2026 | Online, Spain

Train youth workers to guide young people in creating participatory videos. This course session focuses on using space and environment as storytelling tools to counter hate speech and disinformation.

This online training is part of the Erasmus+ project HATE-LESS: Harnessing Awareness to End Hate Speech and Disinformation (https://hate-less.eu/).

It is the first session of a 4-part Train-the-Trainer series, designed to equip youth workers and trainers with non-formal methods to support young people in creating participatory videos as tools to counter hate speech and disinformation.

Format & Logistics Workshop 1/4:

  • Online (Zoom): https://bit.ly/4cRhx88
  • Date: Thursday, 7th of May, 2026
  • Time:
    • 17:00-18:30 CET (Spain, Germany, France)
    • 18:00-19:30 EEST (Cyprus, Estonia)
  • Duration: 1.5 hours

Focus of this Session (Workshop 1) of HATE-LESS Train the Trainer (1/4): Storytelling Through Space - Using Your Location as Your Ideal Participatory Video Background

In this session, participants will explore how an environment (city, home, public space, cyberspace) can shape narratives and influence meaning in video storytelling.

Using participatory approaches inspired by the HATE-LESS methodology, participants will:

  • Learn how to guide youth in using space as a storytelling element
  • Explore visual framing and context in media
  • Create a short participatory video concept using their surroundings

This approach reflects the HATE-LESS focus on moving from awareness to action by enabling young people to create their own narratives through media.

Learning Objectives: Participants will:

  • Understand how to apply participatory video methods in youth work
  • Learn how to facilitate non-formal media literacy activities
  • Develop skills in visual storytelling and framing
  • Gain tools to help youth create counter-narratives to hate speech

Methodology: The training is based on:

  • Non-formal education methods (interactive, experiential learning)
  • Participatory Action Research (PAR) approaches
  • Hands-on video creation exercises
  • Reflection and peer exchange

This aligns with the HATE-LESS toolkit approach, which emphasizes participatory storytelling, media literacy, and youth empowerment through creative expression
