Seminar
9-15 March 2026 | Prague, Písek & Terezín, Czech Republic
We are offering youth workers, (civic) educators, teachers, trainers, staff of museums & remembrance places, researchers, representatives of civil society organisations etc. with interest and strong background in historic-civic (youth) education (18 years +) from Erasmus+ programme countries the opportunity to join the following event:
„European Culture(s) of Remembrance” - Edition: “Czech Republic in Focus” 9th – 15th of March 2026 | Prague, Písek & Terezín (Czech Republic)
The event aims to interrelate four key dimensions: first, it will explore how major historical events are represented in local, regional, and national cultures of remembrance. Second, it will examine how past and present cultures of remembrance influence political and social dynamics in the respective countries (here Czech Republic). Third, it will provide insights into local practices of historical civic education. Fourth, it will create space for exchange, networking, and collaboration among participants on these and related topics.
Key themes & schedule
The event in the Czech Republic will explore key sites of memory that reflect the complex layers of the country’s 20th-century history. The program will begin in Prague with a visit to the exhibition at the National Museum and a guided walk through the city to examine selected memorials and monuments related to key historical events and figures of the 20th century.
The following day, participants will travel to southern Bohemia to visit the Memorial to the Roma and Sinti Victims of the Holocaust in Lety u Písku. This site prompts reflection on the place of minority histories in the national narrative.
From Písek, the group will continue to the Terezín Memorial, one of the most important sites of Holocaust remembrance in Central Europe. In addition to exploring the memorial spaces, participants will meet with representatives of the institution to discuss current challenges in presenting Holocaust history to contemporary audiences. The visit will thus highlight not only how the persecution and suffering of Jewish citizens are remembered and represented in Czech public memory and education, but also how these representations continue to be actively re-evaluated.
The seminar will conclude in Ústí nad Labem, where participants will explore the exhibition Our Germans (Naši Němci), dedicated to the history of the German speaking population in Bohemia. This final visit will open space for discussion about the history of Czech-German relations and the ways in which the historical legacy shapes contemporary understanding of identity, belonging, and collective responsibility.
Together, these visits will offer participants a multifaceted perspective on how the Czech Republic engages with the memory of the 20th century—from the Holocaust and the experience of minorities to the re-evaluation of national and transnational narratives within European remembrance culture.

We are aware of the difficult financial situation of many people active in the field. Nevertheless, we see the offered events as a unique opportunity for personal learning, professional development & networking which should be, beyond the received funding from European taxpayers, not “for free”. Further, as a place of civic education, focusing as well on topics such as (global) social justice, we decided to disrupt the vicious system of underpayment of people active in the field of (international) youth work & education, who dedicate their lifetime & energy for creating quality learning experiences, by offering fair payment for their work, e.g. as free-lance trainers, facilitators or support staff. Therefore, a financial contribution from each participant is required upon individual situation & decision per event:
In case you are not able to afford the fee, please contact us for individual solutions.
Participants are accommodated in double rooms in suitable hotels in the different event venues as follows:
Meals will be provided (breakfast, lunch, dinner). For the transfer between Prague and Písek, a shuttle bus will be organized. The route from Terezín to Ústí will be taken by regular train. All remaining transfers will be arranged with a hired transport provider.
We will reimburse the travel costs on the basis of the cheapest possibilities, e.g. second class railway tickets, economy class flights etc., within the provided limit, from place of residency to the venue of the activity and return, based on the rates of the “distance calculator” of the European Commission https://erasmus-plus.ec.europa.eu/de/node/2626 and related regulations as follows:
Green travel: Travel where low-emission modes of transport are used for the majority of the journey, such as bus, train, bicycle or carpooling.
