Democracy in Action with Betzavta

Training Course

19-25 October 2014 | Copenhagen, Denmark

Democracy in Action applies the principles of democracy to a small group and examines the difference between what we say we want (equality, freedom, inclusion) and how we behave. The goal is self-awareness, awareness of others and responsibility.
Democracy in Action with Betzavta takes the concepts and principles of democracy and gives a new relevance to it by applying these concepts to the workings of a small group. Instead of only talking about the theories of equality, freedom, inclusion, Democracy in Action lets participants reflect on whether their actions reflect their theories. Through interactive activities combined with reflection sessions, participants gain a deeper understanding of themselves and a greater awareness of their effect on others. They learn to recognize their own needs and how to express these needs in a group, as well as what to do when there are conflicting needs in a group. Through a given conflict management strategy, participants learn to deal with conflict through a reflection and awareness of the a decision making process. The ultimate goal is the recognition that while one person’s freedom can step over another’s, every individual has an equal right to freedom. This goal is achieved through an experiential learning process, shaped by the naturally existing dynamics of the group. This training aims to support youth workers and youth working in the field of democracy and inclusion to increase their competences and apply the method to their local contexts. A new and relevant sense of responsibility will be strengthened and forwarded to others in further trainings.

Organiser:

Mellem Education (Youth NGO)

Mellem Education is an organisation that provides educational experiences in the form of trainings and workshops, meant to challenge the individual on their role in a group decision-making process. From Human Rights trainings in schools to communication and professional development trainings at workplaces, Mellem Education’s goal is for each person to recognize and experience every individual’s equal right to freedom. By reflecting on our responsibility in this process, we continuously challenge the system in which we function and work towards building a better society from the bottom up.

Mellem offers a variety of strategies including the Betzavta methodology, which uses the dynamics of the group to shape the content of the workshop. Topics covered include democratic decision-making, minorities/majorities, conflict over limited resources, intercultural communication. Activities are engaging and interactive with a reflection session following each activity to reflect and learn from each other’s behavior.

The educational methodology developed at Mellem is participant-driven, in that the hierarchical nature of traditional teaching is dissolved. Participants create and construct their own learning, thereby gaining a fundamental and in-depth knowledge of the subject matter. Mellem’s workshops have a theoretical component but are not in themselves theoretical. They allow the participant to fully engage in the process, linking the personal with the political, the practice with the theory.
