Create with Makey Makey: Turning Everyday Objects into Interactive Learning

E-learning

1-30 November 2026 | Zoom, Greece

Participants will explore how everyday objects and simple conductive materials can become interactive learning tools and will discover practical ways to integrate Makey Makey, Scratch and STEAM into youth work.

Create with Makey Makey: From Curiosity to Creation through 5E and STEAM is an interactive e-learning training designed for youth workers, trainers, facilitators, educators and professionals who want to use creative technology as a tool for participation, experimentation and active learning.

The training goes beyond learning how to use Makey Makey as a technical device. Its main focus is on how Makey Makey can be integrated into meaningful non-formal learning experiences by combining STEAM education, the 5E instructional model and interactive methodologies.

Throughout the course, participants will experience the five stages of the 5E model: Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate and Evaluate. Each stage will be connected with practical Makey Makey activities and non-formal learning methods.

Participants will begin with curiosity-based challenges and exploratory activities, investigating conductivity and discovering how everyday objects, water, fruit, aluminium foil, graphite, recycled materials and other conductive surfaces can become computer inputs.

They will then explore how Makey Makey can be connected with Scratch and used to create interactive digital experiences such as sound installations, interactive posters, musical instruments, collaborative games, storytelling activities, art projects and team-building challenges.

The STEAM approach will be embedded throughout the training:

Science through conductivity, circuits and experimentation.
Technology through Makey Makey and Scratch.
Engineering through designing and testing interactive systems.
Arts through music, storytelling, visual expression and creative design.
Mathematics through sequencing, patterns, logic and problem-solving.

The training is based on non-formal education principles and prioritises learning by doing, collaboration, experimentation, peer learning, reflection and active participation.

Interactive methods will include breakout-room challenges, brainstorming, object exploration, collaborative design tasks, peer feedback, creative problem-solving, short presentations and reflection activities.

A central element of the course will be the Makey Makey Design Challenge. Participants will work individually or in small groups to design their own interactive learning activity for a specific target group. They will identify a learning objective, select appropriate materials, define the interaction and connect the activity with a wider educational or youth-work theme.

Possible themes may include sustainability, inclusion, cultural heritage, music, creativity, teamwork, digital storytelling, environmental awareness and social participation.

The course is structured as a learning journey from curiosity to creation. Participants will not only learn how Makey Makey works, but also how to transform a technological tool into an engaging, inclusive and meaningful learning experience.

By the end of the training, participants will be able to:

understand the basic principles of Makey Makey and conductivity,

connect Makey Makey with Scratch and interactive digital content,

understand and apply the 5E learning model,

integrate STEAM into non-formal education,

use interactive and experiential learning methods,

design creative activities using everyday and recycled materials,

facilitate collaborative and participatory learning processes,

adapt Makey Makey activities to different target groups and contexts,

and create an original interactive STEAM activity for use in youth work or education.

The training encourages participants to see technology not as the final goal, but as a creative medium through which young people can explore, collaborate, communicate, experiment and create.

Participant Support & Follow-up

The learning experience will continue beyond the live online sessions.

A dedicated online community group will be created for all participants, offering a shared space where members can stay connected, exchange STEAM ideas, share activities and resources, discuss practical applications, and support each other after the training.

Participants will also receive:

the complete training presentation, including the theoretical framework of the course,

an interactive STEAM Toolkit with practical activity ideas, methods and adaptable resources,

examples of Makey Makey activities that can be used in youth work and educational settings,

resources related to the 5E learning model, STEAM and non-formal education,

practical inspiration for designing their own interactive learning activities.

The community space aims to encourage continued peer learning, networking and exchange of good practices, allowing participants to remain part of an active STEAM learning network after the course.

Sapounofouska Events & More is a creative interdisciplinary team specialised in children’s parties, educational programms, non-formal learning activities, and participatory events. The team brings together educators, facilitators, artists, and creators of imaginative group experiences, with a strong focus on playful engagement, inclusion, creativity, and meaningful human interaction.

Its framework of activity combines STEAM education, educational robotics, theatrical play, music-and-movement activities, improv theater, group dynamics, outdoor experiences, educational games, creative workshop design, and interactive festive elements such as bubble show-inspired experiences. The team designs activities for children, young people, educators, and communities, creating spaces where learning, expression, movement, and celebration can coexist in an organic and joyful way.

The educational methodology behind the event is informed by non-formal education, experiential learning, STEAM principles, and the 5E model, which supports a learning journey from curiosity and exploration to meaning-making, extension, and reflection. This makes the event suitable not only as a participatory experience, but also as a space for educational inspiration and practical learning design.

At the heart of the team’s philosophy is the belief that play, creativity, movement, imagination, collaboration, and embodied participation can create powerful conditions for learning and connection. Through its events and educational programs, Sapounofouska seeks to build experiences that are lively, inclusive, memorable, and grounded in the idea that learning can be both meaningful and joyful.
