Alternative Narratives - Training course on combating Hate Speech

Training Course

22-28 October 2021 | Sende in Sado - Setúbal , Portugal

We propose to equip 30 youth workers with competencies to raise awareness about hate speech in local communities in Europe and to empower them to take actions against hate speech locally. Learn, test, create.

You saw hate speech.
You heard hate speech.
Will you change hate speech?

In today’s Europe, hate speech is one of the most prolific forms of intolerance, radicalization, and exclusion. Hate speech is nearly always the result of racist or discriminatory attitudes, especially towards marginalized people. We see the need to address it not only when it is visible, but also at its roots: at the level of attitudes.

With the aim comes the -> OBJECTIVES

  • To improve the understanding of mechanisms of hate speech and the ability to recognize it and address it;
  • To empower youth workers to become advocates and addressing hate speech, and to build capacity in using Human Rights Education approaches and methodologies to prevent and address hate speech;
  • To explore the current realities, challenges, and achievements in relation to addressing hate speech.
  • To learn about the practices and tools to address hate speech such as media literacy, counter, and alternative narratives, advocacy, and conflict transformation.
  • To create space to design at least 8 local actions organized in cooperation with the local authorities and communities addressing hate speech;
  • To promote a multi-stakeholder engagement and to establish sustainable cooperation in combating hate speech among the participants and local decision-makers in their communities.

If you saw the Council of Europe's campaign 'No Hate Speech', you know the basic of this programme and training. Now, the idea is to invite you to learn from other places outside your bubble, to experiment and to co-design and co-develop new ideas to combat today's hate speech.

We are an inclusive network, and we encourage participants that are:

  • activists, peacebuilders or youth workers in the field of radicalization, exclusion, freedom of speech, and human rights.
  • willing to cooperate with their local governments and institutions in the development of actions against Hate Speech.
  • active or interested in the field of peace, human rights, and youth work.
  • ready to act as multipliers of gained competencies after the training.
  • available to take part in the whole duration of the project.
  • being residents in the partner countries.
  • able to communicate in English (you don't need a C1 of English :))
