Training Course

11-16 May 2020 | Oldenburg, Germany

Non-formal learning is the rock in European youth work. We will set out on a learning journey and you are invited to join us!

Non-formal learning (NFL) is a planned process, in which the individual decides to participate on a voluntary basis. This type of learning is not a part of formal education, but it should nonetheless be properly prepared. NFL was recognised as one of the top priorities in the EU Youth Strategy and has been supported by the Youth in Action and Erasmus + programme for the last 20 years. In this time Youthpass and Key Competences were developed to support the recognition and validation of the outcomes of the NFL.

When planning a learning process for your young participants there are many elements to consider. The concept of learning in youth work is still developing and we believe it needs to be better understood. If you are interested in non-formal learning and want to explore the learning in youth work, then this training course might be for you; come and learn how to rock in European youth work!

Aims and objectives

The aim of the training course is to help participants to develop competences to facilitate diverse and meaningful non-formal learning processes in international youth work.

This training course will focus on three major pillars:

  • The importance of non-formal learning in youth work. Participants will be able to develop a better understanding of NFL concept, learn new methods and reflect on the role of Youthpass.
  • The importance of recognising yourself as a learner. Participants will be able to reflect on their own learning process and in this way become more aware of different learning preferences and needs in your youth work
  • The importance of the supporting role of the youth worker. Participants will be able to reflect on their own competences as a youth worker and on how to create a proper learning environment for young people.

Approach and content

On the training course we will use different kind of methodology. It will be a mixture of guided exercises and tasks for the participants with extensive time for discussion and reflection. These activities will either be done individually, in pairs or groups, depending on the purpose of the activity. Part of the methodology will be organised as a self-directed learning, where participants will be encouraged to search for their own learning possibilities and take responsibility for their own learning process.

As the training follows a purely nоn-fоrmal learning apprоach, sessiоns will be based on diffеrеnt crеativе participatоry methоds and a learning-by-doing where we learn from ourselves and from each other and create this experience together.
