WHY

This 9 day study visit will allow you to experience the place, the people and the approaches to the social economy, community based enterprise, routes to employment and hopefully build a platform for new collaborations between Europe and South Africa.

WHAT’S IT ABOUT

Port Elizabeth is a very friendly (and windy) city in South Africa where extreme poverty, middle income, and high income, social challenges all come together. The cultural influences of the black, coloured and white communities, as well as the region’s colonial past are major factors in shaping the approaches and solutions evident to economic and civil society issues that the communities of Port Elizabeth are facing. There is a cultural richness in its diversity, where privilege, education, social class, rituals and history are what make it a unique place to visit, learn, share and explore.

During the study visit you will meet local and international people who will share their social enterprise stories, visit local and international social and community enterprise and social economy and meet with stakeholders, volunteers and staff engaged in this work. We see this very much as a two way process and an equal exchange of practice, learning and development.

Our Solidarity projects are realised in partnership with the South African organisation Ready4Life and a wide range of other organisations, start-ups and businesses. Breakthrough and the partnership are responsible for the organisation and realisation of the Study Visit content, including networking, learning, reflection and documentation. The welcome and closing dinner as well as one one community lunch and the conference day lunch will be covered by the organisation. Local transport for the purpose of the study visit will also be included.

It is at your own responsibility to confirm your bookings of the accommodation and flights.
