Trainers are a core group when it comes to European youth work, particularly in the field of non-formal education. Their professional expertise combined with their ability to perform within an educational framework affect the quality of training activities in a crucial way. This is why the Competence Model for Trainers was developed as part of the European Training Strategy (ETS). The well-thought-out set of competences serves as a dynamic framework to be consulted by trainers as well as institutions and organisations who plan non-formal education training activities. Responding to the increased role of Erasmus+ to support EU youth policy initiatives, the European Commission has revised its European Training Strategy in the field of Youth (ETS). The updated strategy aims at sustaining and developing quality youth work in Europe through capacity building. Introduced as part of the YOUTH (2000-2006) and revised under the Youth in Action Programme (2007-2013), the ETS has proven to be an effective instrument for sustainable capacity building in the field of youth, connecting its micro-, meso- and macro-level.
