Creating a smoke and alcohol free café for youngsters ...presented by Karin from Estonia

  • My project

My Youth Initiative was a pilot project for creating an alcohol and smoke free café for young people in Tallinn. Our core group was 12 young people and we were supported by two organisations, Estonian Temperance Union and The Estonian Union for Child Welfare. We wanted to increase the number of the young people joining and participating in our project and to get their opinions about the concept of this space in order to enrich it.
The two local organisations provided us with the physical space, a legal representation and the access to some office material, which allowed us to devote ourselves to the organisation of the activities in the café, special events and production of audiovisual material promoting prevention against alcohol and drugs abuse.

  • The outcome

The main outcome of the project is the fact that now children and youngsters in Tallinn have a place to meet where they can enjoy leisure activities and which is alcohol and smoke free! They can join our events.
The community has gained, through us, an effective method of prevention. You know, the problem of alcoholism among young people here is serious, so alternatives for their leisure time needed to be found.
We want to visit similar places in Europe to learn about their experiences. We know that there are similar projects abroad, for instance in Finland, and we want to cooperate at European level! Now we need to find sponsors to help continue supporting the idea!
