SALTO Inclusion's Urban Strategy

Many young people living in Europe's cities today face tough challenges. As the young people are resilient, endlessly creative and our hope for the future, SALTO Inclusion jumped on the bandwagon and decided to strategically tackle social challenges in urban contexts over the remaining YiA programme period, 2012-2013.

Similarly to the strategy to combat youth unemployment in 2009-2011, SALTO Inclusion developed a 2 year strategy to analyse the issues at stake in the urban areas and how youth work, Youth in Action and SALTO can address them, with practical youth work activities and tools.

Together with stakeholders, policy makers and experts, we will combine different interventions to improve the circumstances of young people in disenfranchised (sub)urban areas. SALTO Inclusion will spread the gained insights and experiences within the Youth in Action network and youth work in Europe.

First steps towards a SALTO Inclusion Urban Strategy

2011/12 Implemented activities regarding social challenges in urban contexts:

Putting Urban Strategy into Action

All the 2013 "urban" activities are based on and coherent with the strategy:

  • Urban Solutions Stakeholder Seminar on Participation of Young People in (Sub)Urban Areas (15-19 October 2013, Greece)
The second "Urban Solution Seminar" will focus on youth participation in the cities and sharing and giving power to young people.
  • Multicultural Urban Training Course (21-26 May 2013, Poland)
Course for youth workers on how to live together with different communities in the cities. 25 youth workers will be trained on how to 'manage diversity' and how to deconstruct the 'frames' that young people, as well as youth workers are using to approach the world.
  • Long Term Training Course on Urban Youth - final & evaluation phase (4-10 February, France)
A long-term training course started in December 2011 in cooperation with the NA Hungary and France about issues urban youth are facing. The aim of the second residential seminar is to evaluate and share the projects and experiences undergone during a period of practice in 2012 and at the same time to offer new knowledge and skills on some specific issues in the city.
  • Long Term Project "Enter! Promoting Access to Social Rights for All Young People" (France)
The Council of Europe project is focused on youth work and youth policy responses to problems of social exclusion of young people, particularly those living in disadvantaged neighbourhoods and affected by discrimination, violence and generally speaking exclusion. SALTO Inclusion will be partner in this course and contribute resources and expertise.
