SALTO Inclusion work 2009

2009 was a year of change. SALTO Inclusion started it's longer-term approach working on youth and un/employment. With a SALTO Training Course focussing on this topic and one of the Inclusion Colleague Support Groups. Besides the many other activites: TOY, Youthpass, Publications,...

Inclusion Capacity Building & Training

The SALTO Inclusion courses are highly appreciated, and many compete for few places. In the light of the Youth Pact, SALTO Inclusion contributed to the training of those with low educational attainment to increase their chances on the labour market and in life in general. This group of young people is underrepresented in the Youth in Action programme (most participants are well educated youth):

  • Therefore SALTO Inclusion in cooperation with the Portuguese NA organised a Training Course on Unemployment for youth workers (or other professionals or volunteers) working with school drop outs, youth with low educational attainment, unemployed young people.
  • The course resulted in an educational publication about Working on Work, besides the skills & knowledge gained at the course.
  • Based on these 2009 activities addressing Youth Unemployment, SALTO Inclusion set up it's longer term Unemployment Strategy (2009-2011)

SALTO Inclusion used the Inclusion Quality Charter for the organisation of its Training Courses

For the Inclusion officers of the National Agencies we continued the successful formula of Inclusion Colleague Support Groups: small working meetings of the Inclusion Officers of National Agencies discussing inclusion issues, sharing ideas and experiences - centred around specific topics.

In 2009 these topics were:

  • How to involve young people who face unemployment - February 2009 (Hosted by Turkish NA)
  • How to involve young people with a disability - November 2009 (Hosted by Icelandic NA)
  • EVS as tool for inclusion - December 2009 (Hosted by Czech NA)

SALTO Inclusion also continued to support NAs & SALTOs in developing Inclusion activities (mostly with expertise and staff resources) e.g.

Tools & Publications

As is common practice, all useful training methods from the SALTO Inclusion training courses & seminars are documented online in the Toolbox for Training & Youth Work: www.salto-youth.net/toolbox/.

We continued to develop educational publications (Inclusion for ALL booklets) based on our training courses and cooperation activities. This way more people can benefit from them than only the participants at the course.

  • Hence SALTO Inclusion published the Youthpass for All publication on using Youthpass in youth projects with young people with fewer opportunities.
  • Working on Work on the other hand is based on the SALTO TC Unemployment, reflecting on youth work and employment and how you can use YiA as a tool for increasing young people's chances on the labour market.
  • SALTO Inclusion also published Inclusion by Design, an adaptation for youth NGOs of the Shaping Inclusion guide for NAs, full of guidance in working strategically on inclusion.
  • We also continued to develop a Good Practice folder on Inclusion, with inspiration from different inclusion projects - if you know any great inclusion projects (send them to inclusion@salto-youth.net)

Translations of SALTO Inclusion Booklets

SALTO Inclusion promoted the translation of its Inclusion for All booklets into different languages - and also the Making Waves booklet.

SALTO Inclusion Website & Newsletter

SALTO Inclusion works for the whole of Europe - that's why we work a lot with the internet and email-newsletters, to reach as many inclusion workers as possible with limited resources.

  • We sent around 8 Inclusion Newsletters in 2009.

TOY - Trainers Online for Youth

SALTO Inclusion also continued its role of TOY administrator in 2009. Managing the day-to-day management and quality check of the trainer database, as well as presence at different trainers activities to contribute to the discussions of quality in youth training in Europe. For example:

  • Network-Trainers meeting - organised by SALTO Training & Cooperation (Germany)

Other Support activities & meetings

SALTO Inclusion presented the inclusion work as done in the Youth in Action programme at different conferences, for example:

  • Ethnic minorities meeting with SALTO Cultural Diversity (Brussels)
  • Youth at risk & ICT conference (Sevilla)
  • Youth Work International - Experiencing Diversity (Bonn)
  • YIPPEE conference (Brussels)

SALTO Inclusion based its workplan 2009 on the needs and suggestions of different stakeholders: inclusion workers, National Agencies, the European Commission, SALTO and YOU ! We collected feedback at different meetings and via the web.
