Description of the tool

Several magazine pages are collected (enough for the whole group). Each one of them is photocopied. The copied ads are kept intact; the colored pages (originals) are cut like a puzzle. On the back of each part of each picture, the picture number is written (i.e., on the back of all six parts of picture #1, we write "1"). The same is done to all the other pictures. One piece from each picture is taken and kept. The rest is mixed up and one piece is given to each participant. They are asked to find the other people with pieces they need to make a complete picture. After a few minutes, the black and white copy of each picture is displayed so that they would learn what they are looking for. They are also told that they need 6 pieces to make a full picture. If, after 5-7 minutes, some groups are still struggling, they are told about the numbers on the back. Even with this information, however, they will have some problems, for the missing piece that is kept prevents them from solving the task.
After the exercise finished, debriefing is done. Possible questions to ask:
What happens when a key element is missing?
What happens when a group member is missing?
How did you feel when you learnt about the numbers on the back?
How did you feel when you knew you were not given all the information (i.e., not being told about the missing piece)?
Have you encountered situations when you didn't have all the information you needed? What did you do?
