I designed this method in order to enable participants to assess their individual learning process after each training with a focus on attitudes, skills and knowledge they acquire.

Aims of the tool

- to enable participants to assess their individual learning process
- to focus on attitudes, skills and knowledge gained during the training
- to go deeper into the learning outcome and reflect on learning achievements
- to support participants to go back and reflect upon their learning achievements individually and at the same time to see what participants achieved as a group

Description of the tool

Step 1: Brainstorming
Facilitator presents the SKA model (skills, knowledge, attitudes) and together with the participants tries to distinguish these categories and define them in order to make the task clear.
Step 2: Explanation of the task
Participants are asked to reflect about the attitudes, skills and knowledge they got during the training. They get 5 minutes for each assessment. For that we use Human Model – Hand, Heart and Head. Head symbolizes knowledge, hand – skills and heart – feelings and attitudes. The task is to reflect and write down some keywords and afterwards stick them on the human being, which is hanging on the wall. This helps participants to assess their own learning process individually and bring individual reflections on the group level and discuss similarities and differences between learning experiences and outcomes.
Step 3: Individual Reflection
To make it more structured, participants receive 3 parts of the body separately. First, they get the head and have to reflect upon knowledge they learnt. To get them deeper and more concrete, facilitator can write some directive questions on the flipchart for every category. The questions can be as following:
Knowledge:
- What I have learnt about (the topic or name of the session)?
- In which area I feel more specialized and knowledgeable?
- On which topic I can deliver a seminar?
Skills:
- What are the skills that I developed?
- What was the main skill I got in order to successfully implement my project?
- In which area I feel I have more competencies?
Attitudes and Feelings:
- How did I change my attitudes towards my community where I live in?
- What major changes I have noticed in myself?
- What were the most negative and positive feelings I had?
Step 4: Peer Talk
After individual reflection, participants formed peers and started to discuss their own SKA model. Peer conversation lasted 10 minutes (5 minutes each) and gave them opportunity to discuss and share their major learning achievements.
Step 5: Designing the human being
After the peer talk participants are asked to design a human being by gluing hands, heads and hearts on the human. After the human being is created participants have a chance to have a look and get a global picture.
