Youth participation in Norway

The involvement of young people in policy-making in Norway happens mostly at the level of county councils and municipalities. So far, this has only been optional and consultative. There are county councils in all 18 counties of Norway. Most municipalities have some form of youth consultation organ. In 2018, the Norwegian parliament decided on a new law for municipalities in Norway. All municipalities and counties will now be obliged to have a youth council or another organ for youth participation. The provisions of this law are now going through a consultation process.

For more information on youth participation on Norway, see Youth Wiki: https://eacea.ec.europa.eu/national-policies/en/content/youthwiki/5-participation-norway

During the study visit, young participants from the youth councils and staff in municipality and county administrations in southern Norway will share their experiences of setting up and running youth councils and similar structures, how to reach out to and engage young people, share examples of different methods, share experiences on how to ensure commitment from policy makers and how to make these processes engaging and youth-friendly.
