FEEL.SHARE.ACT! Training course for youth workers to empower multicultural urban youth

Training Course

1-7 June 2013 | Antwerp, Belgium - FL

During this training youth workers in an urban context will find insights to motivate and support young people with diverse cultural backgrounds to become a responsible actor in their society and to realize their potentials.
All knowledge begins with oneself. It’s essential to reflect on questions such as “who am I?”, “what is my relationship with other people?”, “which is my position in society?”, “what is my view on the society”, “where do I belong?”. The significance of a pluralistic society in Europe is crucial these days. That’s why it’s important to learn to cherish our similarities as well as our differences, especially in an urban context. A good knowledge of one’s own values can help in this process. Taking this questioning attitude as a starting point, this training course will provide you with knowledge, skills, attitudes and insights to work with young people in a multicultural urban context. We will do this by: • Exploring the important dimensions of civic and learning to learn competence • Mapping the challenges of young people with diverse cultural identities in an urban context • Finding together an answer on questions as What does ‘active participation’ and ‘sense of belonging’ mean for those young people? • Finding ways to empower them to be an active actor in the society they live in. Target group: youth workers, youth leaders and volunteers working with young people from diverse ethnic cultural backgrounds in an urban context. General aim: To train youth workers in an urban context to empower young people with diverse cultural backgrounds. During this training participants will find insights to motivate and support young people to become a responsible actor in their society and to realize their potentials. Objectives: -To develop social, political, cultural insights on working in a multicultural urban context in order to improve the position of youngsters with diverse cultural identities in society. - To explore and develop a view on the concept ‘sense of belonging’ and ‘active participation’ and how to implement this concept in your daily work. - To exchange different tools and methods on how to involve young people in different society projects and to raise awareness of their competences -To use your own value framework as a tool to empower and motivate young people with diverse cultural identities. • Insight in your own perceptions ( projecting shadow cultures) • Questioning the emancipatory and participatory viewing (minorities versus citizen) • Improving the empathic sense and avoiding victimization • Effect of high expectations, low expectations • Exploring the competences to deal with ambiguity -To better communicate with and empower their target group. -To discover the Youth in Action programme and its actions as a tool to support their objectives and enable them to actively involve the young people they are working with. Elements of the training course -Questioning approach -Different learning methods based on non- formal education: self-directed learning methods, reflection, peer to peer learning on real world tasks, theory input -Visits to different good practices and society projects to get inspiration and get in contact with colleagues in the field.
