Seminar on Urban Youth 2007

A seminar organised for youth workers and project organisers working with urban youth or in disadvantaged urban settings - about how to use the European YOUTH programme as a tool to create meaningful projects for this target group in this context.

Social Exclusion? Unbelievable!

The SALTO Inclusion Resource Centre is cooperating with the French NA (INJEP), within its strategy to promote the inclusion of a variety of specific target groups with fewer opportunties in the YOUTH programme. SALTO Inclusion published a youth worker manual about setting up international projects with urban youth - "Youth and the City" - based on this seminar. Download or order it here.

Dates & Venue

  • This seminar took place in Les Mureaux (a suburb of Paris) in France from Wednesday 12 December till Sunday 16 December 2007 = 3 full working days.

Aims & Objectives

  • Explore and analyse how international youth projects can be used to work with young people in disadvantaged (sub)urban areas

More concretely:

  • present good practices of previous urban youth projects and deduce principles for working effectively with this target group
  • get to know local urban realities, both on site in Les Mureaux, as well as in each others' countries.
  • develop how the Youth in Action projects can contribute to change in young people's lives living in disadvantaged (sub)urban areas
  • share existing resources (funding, methods, publications, activities,...) for urban youth work

There were places for 60 participants at the seminar, selected according to the criteria below:

  • having organised/implemented international youth projects and cooperation activities in (sub)urban areas - either within the YOUTH programme or other programmes or initiatives.
  • having a good working knowledge of (international :-) English, the working language of the seminar
  • available to actively attend the full duration of the course
  • willing to participate into a follow-up questionnaire 6 months after the training course.

Team of Trainers

The trainers team is composed of these 2 trainers, plus a representative of Les Mureaux, INJEP & SALTO inclusion.

SALTO Inclusion did a call for a trainer/author to work on the Urban Youth Seminar - and selected Katrin Alban. The other trainer selected by INJEP is Patricia Brulefert.

Gilles Baccala of the French National Agency (INJEP) will coordinate this seminar. Tony Geudens will be on the team for the SALTO-Inclusion Resource Centre.
