in Arrouquelas, Portugal

Aims & objectives

The overall aim of the training course was to train youth workers, youth leaders who directly working with rural youth (living in villages, settlements, islands, etc.) on supporting active participation of young people in the life of local community. To motivate and involve them to explore the values, traditions and heritage of their communities and based on these cultural aspects to give answers for the needs of the local communities. To support development of local communities through local and international youth projects as KA1 Mobility of young people and youth workers, international youth exchanges, trainings and EVS based on preserving traditions and cultural heritage.

Learning objectives of the training course were:
- To be able to ensure ways of active participation of young people in the local communities;
- To raise awareness of cultural protection in rural areas, to be capable to explore traditions, values, heritage in rural areas and to find the ways to rethink them and rebuild into the nowadays life;
- To foster understanding of needs of local communities concerning rural development;
- To get acquainted with project management of international youth exchanges, youth workers' mobility and EVS as a tool for rural development;
- To find partners for future projects according to the proposals of Erasmus + programme.

Target group & international/intercultural composition of the group & team

Target group was 30 participants from Portugal, Hungary, Poland, Italy, Denmark, Georgia, Armenia, Moldova, Belarus, Ukraine.
Their profile:
- Youth workers, youth leaders who are directly working with young people from geographically disadvantages areas e.g. villages, settlements, farms, islands, etc.
- Youth workers, youth leaders who are willing to cooperate in international youth projects after the training course;
- Ready to take part in the whole training course;
- Have organizational support for further activities;
- To be able to communicate English language.

Training methods used & main activities

The training course was based on non – formal education and it consisted of non – formal, formal and informal learning aspects. It was learner - centred. Experienced trainers’ team provided active and participatory methods. Participants were responsible for own learning process. Nevertheless, several creative methods were provided for them in order to assess their learning process and learning outcomes. Participants had to be prepared before coming to this training. They made a research in their local communities to explore and collect cultural heritage e.g. folk songs, recipes, dance, handicraft, clothes, etc. they think it is important and useful for their communities. During the training course, they presented those, to share it with others and collectively create a strategic plan how these traditions can be useful in rural development. During the training course participants got familiar with project management of international youth exchanges, trainings and EVS and prepared projects based on their cultural heritage in order to develop their local communities through these projects.
The training course had theoretical and practical parts.
Theoretical parts:
- Project management of Erasmus + Programme;
- Different ways of active participation of young people in local communities;
- Participation according to the European Commission as proposals in the European Youth Strategy “Investing and Empowering young people”;
- How to make a research in local communities.

Practical parts:
- To make a small research in their local communities before the training course concerning cultural heritage;
- To make a research in the venue of the training course in order to explore cultural heritage there;
- To create an exhibition from the brought cultural heritage and the newly explored ones for the local inhabitants of the training venue;
- To prepare international youth exchanges, EVS and youth workers' mobilities for rural development.

Outcomes of the activity

Participants invented 5 youth projects according to the proposals of Erasmus + programme as Mobility projects for young people and youth workers.

Participants made a self - assessment process during the training and used its outcomes to fill in the self - assessment part of their Youthpass certificate.
Here is their learning achievements collected:
- I learnt about Participation ( how the new youth people become active). New energisers. Ways of NGOs help. Learn how EC help NGOs people become independent.
We learn about school system in Norway, how freezing is there and the way of living without a parent. And in Moldova they have still blood haters in rural areas. Someone did not cover with scarf and eat pork in Armenia. Learning about NGO.
- Yesterday was a really nice day because we had interview with people in Arrouquelas and find out about sport activities, food, wine, buildings, olive oils, and tradition in Arrouquelas. Than we learnt about we doing exhibition with locals and a lot of traditional games.
- We were talking about the exhibition and that was very interesting because everybody had different opinion. We learned how to make a difference between boss and leader, hearing and listening. And that we learnt through our mistakes. Than we learned about Arrouquelas and how a party looks like.
- Sharing and learning about other peoples’ experiences;
- Learnt about other NGOs;
- Learning about other cultures and communities through direct experiences;
- Learn how to evaluate our work and how to have fun and stronger friendship.

- Last night by international evening. I learnt a new tradition in world. Eat a traditional food of the countries and watched promo film of the countries.

- I’ve learned about new cultures and I’ve received information about TC projects.

- I’ve learnt to create a symbol for a target, the Wilcox Ladder and a funny energizer experience;
- I’ve discovered the Wilcox Ladder, that can be very useful for my job.
- I spoke a lot with Ukrainian and they told me many interesting aspects.
- We tried to express ourselves in an art form of making discussion and also we found out that different countries have different levels of organizations.
- We feel that we are getting to know each other.
- Wilcox ladder was a new concept which I truly enjoyed learning about and will surely adopt it when making my decision in future.
- I learned the way to know and conserve some aspects of the local cultures. Yesterday was amazing and I understood really the importance of the rural area.
- Interesting local community. Visit the biggest winery. Great time on exhibition. Dancing with all participants.
- Arrouquelas is a beautiful village + nice company.

• Yesterday we met a local community talk with them and feel like we were part of Arrouquelas culture. We learned a lot about other countries, cultures like their dance, their food, their drinks etc.
- Small Steps forward towards a great cooperation.
- Participation growed into something new „ new grasses”;
- Non verbal bonding through dance. Towards our goals;
- The evaulation and the discussion was important and interesting. Networking all night. Fun. 
- Inspite of all the different cultures I loved that we have a lot if things common.
- I learned that maybe I can apply through EU to bring same of the participants to Norway to work at our NGO 
- I’ve learnt something more about the culture values and traditions of other participants’ countries and I’ve met people that have my same passions with which I am share future projects.

- We had a very good debate about the exhibition which helped us to create an idea of how should be a real exhibition.
- We had an interesting day, we learnt about Erasmus + and YIA, EVS, PBA. Also we made postcards with ideas how we should use our experience from here and from our home town.
- We learnt about making a project with our own ideas and the best of new ideas from everyone that helps us to think about those ideas. Also we had a great night.
- Found new partners and exchange ideas;
- Learnt about Erasmus Plus programme and other like EVS-Exchange;
- I learnt much about other cultures and I developed new friendship that will help me to learn more and more;
- I found some possible network partners for my job.

- Very informative and well organized day. The leaders taught us about Erasmus+ for the whole day and amazingly it wasnt boring . We actually enjoyed it bacause it was interesting.

Your tasks and responsibilities within the team

I was responsible for writing the content of the application, work on the aims, objectives, themes, planned methodology and the preliminary programme of the training course.
Invented new training methods in order to achieve expected learning outcomes of participants and support their needed competence development during the training.
I was one of the trainers who run the different sessions and was fully responsible for the success of the training.

I worked on this training for 7 days as a full time trainer.
