Aims & objectives

The workshop aimed to raise awareness on gender-based violence and the role of media in shaping public perceptions, particularly focusing on street harassment and femicide. It addressed the need for safer public spaces for women and LGBTIQA+ individuals, and more responsible media coverage. The activity aligned with the goals of the EU-funded BURADAYIZ Project, which promotes inclusive urban participation and gender equality.

Target group & international/intercultural composition of the group & team

The participants were primarily young activists, students, and civil society members from Turkey, with a focus on women and LGBTIQA+ individuals. The project was part of an EU-funded transnational partnership and involved intercultural dialogue across multiple workshops and cities (Istanbul, Ankara), giving the activity an international dimension.

Training methods used & main activities

I used non-formal learning methods including group-based media analysis, rewriting headlines, and case-based reflection. Participants critically examined the masculine and victim-blaming discourse in media coverage of street harassment and femicide. The session was highly interactive and participatory, fostering safe space dialogue.

Outcomes of the activity

The workshop helped participants rethink how gender-based violence is portrayed in media and empowered them to challenge harmful narratives. Feedback was collected through informal discussions and follow-up engagement. The event was documented on social media (Instagram: @buradayizproject), as well as on the official website and press materials of the BURADAYIZ Project.

Your tasks and responsibilities within the team

I served as the lead trainer for the first workshop of the BURADAYIZ Street Safety series. I designed and facilitated the session titled “Masculine Media Language in News on Street Harassment and Femicide,” and guided the entire workshop process. I collaborated with the core team to align the content with the project’s gender and media goals.

I worked on this training for 3 days as a full time trainer.
