Mentoring and Befriending Young Refugees

Aims & objectives

Raising awareness about the experiences of young refugees, who are refugees? Why do they leave their country of origin? What is the journey to safety like? What particular needs to they have when they reach their country of sanctuary?

What is the role of a mentor and befriender with young refugees?

Professional boundaries, supporting young people to reach their goals, safeguarding awareness, communication techniques.

Target group & international/intercultural composition of the group & team

The participants were from a ran of nationalities. This included; The UK, Ireland, Canada, Spain, France, Greece, Nigeria, Burundi, Tanzania.

I co-trained with young people from Pakistan, Eritrea and Afghanistan.

Training methods used & main activities

Young people as co-trainers. Young people used story telling and personal testimonials as well as co-facilitating some of the exercises.

Other methods included the use if audio and visual (film) resources, group work discussions, partner working, kinesthetic exercises, quizzes, case studies, games.

Outcomes of the activity

22 mentors and befrienders were trained.

All completed a base line and post training evaluation form.

All reported that their knowledge of refugee issues had grow significantly.

All reported they felt a lot more confident to start in their role as a mentor or a befriender to a newly arrived young refugee.

Your tasks and responsibilities within the team

I lead on writing all the training material and resources.

I lead on training the young people as co-trainers and supporting their involvement.

I booked the training venue, divised the communications, co-ordinated the bookings, arranged the refreshments and transport arrangements for the young people who were co-trainers.

I lead on the training delivery.

I lead on designing and facilitating the evaluation.

I reported to funders (the Big Lottery Fund) on how this training ha gone.

I worked on this training for 4 days as a full time trainer.
