A verification game where players assess whether images are real, altered, or AI-generated, learning key techniques for spotting visual manipulation.

Aims of the tool

To build visual-literacy skills by:
a) Teaching players how to identify signs of manipulated or AI-generated images; and
b) Strengthening reasoning using observation, context, and comparison.

Description of the tool

Developed under the Unfake Social Media project’s Lateral Reading category, Real or Fake? challenges players to examine a range of images — from authentic photos to AI-generated or digitally altered visuals. Players decide whether each image is real or fake and justify their conclusions.

Facilitators introduce practical verification techniques used by real fact-checkers, from analysing shadows and inconsistencies to spotting generative-AI artefacts.

This hands-on experience helps players recognise visual misinformation and understand how digital manipulation can distort reality.
