Exercise
A board-game journey where players analyse sources, authors, dates, and context to judge whether news items are reliable, misleading, or false.
To enhance systematic fact-checking skills by:
a) Guiding players to evaluate multiple elements of a news source; and
b) Promoting teamwork, discussion, and strategic thinking in determining credibility.
Developed under the Unfake Social Media project’s Lateral Reading category, Truth Trek challenges players to progress along a board filled with credibility tests. Each step requires analysing a news article’s source, author, publication date, and context before deciding if it is trustworthy or questionable.
The structured progression encourages methodical, lateral reading — looking beyond the headline and checking what lies behind the information. Strategic choices, teamwork, and debate enrich the gameplay experience.
Truth Trek builds confidence in navigating news critically and teaches players how to identify the markers of credible versus misleading reporting.
