Red Sand Youth Exchange

Raising awareness about human trafficking through media of art

Dates: 8 days in July-beginning of August 2021 (30 July is an international Human Trafficking Awareness day);

Venue: The Netherlands;

PROJECT BACKGROUND:

Contrary to what we should expect nowadays, human trafficking is still a reality. More than 20 million people around the globe fall victims to modern slavery. Victims are often entangled in forced labour, seen a source of human organs or for sexual exploitation.

Trafficking in persons is a serious crime and a grave violation of human rights. Every year, thousands of men, women and children fall into the hands of traffickers, in their own countries and abroad. Given to the recent events of people fleeing their countries, Europe has become a place where refugees have the need to feel safe and secure. The ambition of eradicating Human Trafficking is reinforced in the EU Action Plan on Human Rights and Democracy 2020-2024.

THE MAIN ACTIVITY:

In this YE we partner with Red Sand Project, which is a participatory art project which we will engage throughout the exchange in the Netherlands. Additionally, the participants will organise their local red sand campaigns after the youth exchange in their local communities.

This Youth Exchange aims at raising awareness about human trafficking through providing young people with useful terminology related to Human Trafficking, as well as motivating young people to act upon this matter. The participants will work together with the use of non-formal education to achieve the following specific objectives of the Youth exchange:
- Raise awareness and form an understanding about human trafficking among youth;
- Create an understanding of mechanisms and forms of human trafficking;
- Inform how young people can protect their rights and help others on everyday life;
- Share the perspectives of different countries, as well as to form an understanding of the transnational dimension of human trafficking;
- Involve various stakeholders which work on prevention of human trafficking in communication with youth;
- Form a base for young people to raise awareness of their peers in local communities under a coordinated international campaign;
- Enhance the cooperation between organisations either these are youth organisations and/or social, political movements.
