Summary:
The project "Building Seas of Excellence: The Power is Yours!" is a result of our will to actively contribute to oceans’ preservation and beaches’ protection, which are greatly endangered by long-term exploitation. We believe that young people are the 5th element, the one that makes the difference in balancing human relationship with nature and that has the power to change things! This PBA will gather NGOs from Europe in Galé Beach, Portugal. This location offers great advantages in terms of logistics (high quality and eco-friendly camping with meeting facilities) and accessibilities (it's near Setúbal, where recreational and industrial harbours, Port Authority, fishery activities and sea industries are located, and it's integrated in several protected areas like Tróia Peninsula, Arrábida Natural Park, Sado-Estuary Nature Reserve and Costa Vicentina Nature Reserve).
The PBA will take place between October 1 and 7, 2011, right after the end of the official bathing season when beach pollution is higher. The project will address the specific challenges of oceans’ reservation, coast line protection and beach cleaning, focusing on:
- Experience-sharing – the dos and don’ts on coast line protection projects;
- The contamination cycle – the case of plastic sea islands;
- How to successfully link the upstream (sea polluters) and downstream (waste treatment and recycling industries) of the pollution chain;
- Designing strategies to engage the civil society, municipalities and public institutions in coast line protection projects;
- Workshop on Beach Cleaning – the case of “Sea Brigade” voluntary team;
- Building a pilot project that could be trialled in different coastline countries.
