Chance for Life Foundation Romania is looking for partners from the Danube countries (Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Moldova and Ukraine) to organise a youth exchange through the Youth in Action Programme, Action 1.1, the EU Programme for young people.
The project will focus on Active Citizenship, Inclusion of young people with fewer opportunities and Environmental Sustainability.
Calendar: Beginning of August 2010 – we will establish together with our partners the exact period
Participants: 4
Group leader: 1
Age: 18-25
Venue: Sulina – Romania
Description of Sulina: a town and free port in the easternmost point of Romania, Sulina was once a prosperous port and important shipyard, seat of the Danube Commission with a fascinating history, a pirates’ nest and once the most cosmopolite city of the country (Romanians, Lipovans, Greeks, Turks, Tatars, Armenians, British, French, Dutch, Italians, Germans etc.). Sulina is located between the river Danube and the Black Sea giving therefore perfect access to the Black Sea’s beach and to visit the Danube Delta.
One of the main concerns regarding the environment in Central and Eastern Europe is Danube pollution.
The goal of the project is to stimulate young people to take action for the environment of their community and to raise awareness that their actions influence other people living along the Danube and finally the Danube Delta. The environmental problems that the local community confronts (dumping waste, deterioration of ecosystems etc.) endanger the safety of future generations and the existence of the Danube Delta itself as a rich and varied habitat and a stopover and breading area for over 300 bird species.
The main objectives of the project are:
- to raise awareness and understanding among young people of threats the Danube and Danube Delta are facing as ecosystems
- to develop intercultural learning and foster mutual understanding and solidarity between young people in 7 countries
- to increase self-confidence of young people with fewer opportunities and young unemployed people to actively contribute (active citizens) to the protection of the Danube and Danube Delta and maintaining of biodiversity
Participants: NGO’s or non-formal youth groups to address the issues of biodiversity, protection of natural resources and ecotourism. We would like to find local solutions for the problems through creative activism and create short messages, like movies, photo reportages to invite society to think and act for the protection of the Danube’s and Danube Delta’s environment at local, national and international level. Other activities will include: on site excursions, creative performances, preparation of the project results and their dissemination, cultural evenings, workshops. Our aim is that young people understand how their own small negative actions can affect the Danube in other countries except their own and inevitably the Danube Delta, its environment (fishstock, birdlife) and how these then have a boomerang effect on their own society. The aim is to understand that protection of the environment leads to the protection of own health and that of future generations.
We are looking for youngsters of the seven nationalities of different genders and backgrounds interested in movie, photography, ornithology/birdwatching, web design, handicrafts, theatre, making and realization of performances, with different levels of experience in these fields. Also they are interested in issues of environmental protection, they have the wish to work in an international team and through creative methods search for possibilities to communicate the knowledge gained through this exchange in their own communities/country.
Global environmental issues can only be addressed if local people undertake activities that make a significant role to their own lives and their environment. Hereby, we consider young people the most effective and reliable part of a society to create a sustainable future.
