Breakout Boxes

Training Course

29 March - 5 April 2023 | Kaprálův Mlýn, Brno, Czech Republic

Breakout Boxes is an international training course on the use of game-based learning, escape room mechanics and out-of-the-box approaches in non-formal education.

The training aims to provide youth workers with competences and tools to facilitate game-based learning activities, as well as develop their own. The training focuses on breakout boxes – an innovative approach to educational escape rooms which are scalable and playable in large groups of people. Imagine a box wihin a box within a box which invites the players to explore a socially relevant topics in an interactive way.

Since 2016, we have been running a series of trainings for educators working with young people focused on game-based learning methods in non-formal education. We explored the potential of escape rooms in experiential and non-formal learning, and we loved it. However, we saw limits of educational escape rooms and decided to experiment with different approaches. As part of a strategic partnership project, we have developed 8 concepts of breakout boxes – scalable escape rooms which can be played even with large groups in a classroom setting. Over 700 young people and youth workers have so far participated in learning events where the boxes have been used. Now we want to invite other youth workers to explore the methodology, develop and test their own breakout boxes and learn how to facilitate them.

During this training, you will:

  • Learn how to properly facilitate and debrief game-based learning activities with an emphasis on breakout box type activities;
  • Have a chance to develop and facilitate your own educational escape boxes;
  • Explore game-based learning, gamification and innovative approaches to non-formal education and experiential learning;
  • Follow the steps of educational game development process and create and test own game concept;
  • Gain access to a wide set of resources you can use in your own educational practice.
