Biblioguidance in a confusing world

Training Course

26 October - 4 November 2021 | Kysak, Slovak Republic

The art of using literature and storytelling methods in working with youth and young people at risk of social exclusion.

Stories and storytelling are the oldest and most powerful communication tool that humanity possesses. Books and literature of different kind can help in achieving psychological well being. In today’s deeply technicized, digital world, we are flooded by the mass media content that can easily distort our realities and perception of self-worth. We are so often overwhelmed with information, but we lack real content and valuable human interactions.

Biblioguidance in a confusing world is a 9 day training course which aims to provide Biblioguidance and Storytelling skills to youth workers working with young people at risk of social exclusion. During the training course we will learn how literature of all kinds, from poetry, book passages, quotations, songs, segments of movies, speeches, videos, can help an individual find their own voice and articulate personal experiences.
The main goal of the training course is to explore the therapeutic potentials of Biblioguidance, discovering how literature and storytelling can help navigate better the challenges in our lives.

In our workshops, we are going to read different book passages and various poems, we will use our creativity in exploring already existing, and maybe even create new storytelling methods that will raise our own self-awareness and improve our work with youngsters. Through reading and/or writing, discussing certain chapters or characters, we will learn how to better articulate our own experiences and, by doing so, how to live a more fulfilled and meaningful life.

What else are we going to do?

- learn about historical perspective of bibliotherapy and usage of bibliotherapy and poetry pharmacy that exist in the world

- explore the concepts of bibliotherapy by personally experiencing different literary forms as vehicle for our self-awareness and personal growth

- immerse ourselves in the self-reflective process of journaling, writing, reading, debating and such

- explore how biblioguidance, storytelling and creative writing methods and exercises can be adjusted and used in working with youth and youngsters at risk

- create a Bookguiding Repository with texts and different materials that will be of use in our work back home
