EVS training sessions for volunteers

Training and Evaluation Cycle for EVS Volunteers in the Western Balkans

According to the Erasmus+ Programme Guide, all volunteers have the right and responsibility to attend EVS training sessions in order to receive information about the European Voluntary Service and support and tools that will help them achieve as much as possible in the time of their service.

The Training and Evaluation Cycle for EVS volunteers consists of two sessions:

  • On-arrival training (only for EVS activities lasting 60 days or more, travel days excluded*) and
  • Mid-term evaluation meeting (only for EVS activities lasting 6 months or more - more precisely, 180 days or more, travel days excluded).

*For projects having 59 activity days or less, participating organisations have the responsibility to organise preparation sessions that are adapted to the needs of the volunteers and/or to the type of EVS activity. In this case On-arrival training must be provided to the volunteers by the hosting organization.

In Programme countries, the Training and Evaluation Cycle is implemented by the National Agencies. In the Programme's Neighbouring partner countries in the Western Balkans and Eastern Partnership countries and the Russian Federation, the training and evaluation cycle is implemented by the SALTO SEE Resource Centre (for the Western Balkans) and the SALTO EECA Resource Centre (for Eastern Partnership countries and the Russian Federation).

In the countries of the Western Balkans (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo (*), Montenegro and Serbia), these training sessions are usually organised at regional level, bringing together EVS volunteers based in the whole region for one session. This arrangement gives EVS volunteers the opportunity to meet other volunteers in the region and to get to know different realities within the region itself.

(*) This designation is without prejudice to positions on status, and is in line with UNSCR 1244 and the ICJ Opinion on the Kosovo declaration of independence.

Additional trainings and support provided for EVS volunteers

In order for the EVS projects to be successful and experiences to be positive and enriching for EVS volunteers, it is crucial  that Sending or Coordinating Organisations adequately prepare volunteers prior to their departure.

The European Commission, in cooperation with National Agencies and SALTOs has prepared an EVS volunteer Info-kit with useful pre-departure information for volunteers. The Kit has four compulsory parts:

Welcome letter

What to expect from EVS

Information about the EVS insurance for volunteers

Information about Youthpass in EVS

Old but still useful guides on the Youthpass and EVS Insurance Scheme:

Youthpass in EVS

The European Voluntary Service Insurance Plan Volunteer's Guide

In addition, EVS volunteers who have completed their service are also invited to Annual EVS Events. These Events organised by National Agencies and SALTOs may serve as evaluation meetings, alumni meetings and promotional events.
