Young people and extremism: a resource pack for youth workers

This new publication builds on the training events organised by SALTO Cultural Diversity, with Erasmus+ National Agencies, in 2016. It is intended to provide theoretical and practical support to youth workers, and to provide information and insight to policy-makers, youth and education practitioners and other organisations involved in responding to the risks from radicalisation and extremism.

This resource pack offers ideas, examples and practical techniques through which youth workers, community workers, policymakers and those who work with young people can engage with challenging questions and better understand the context young people are living in. It explores the role of youth work with an international dimension, and of non-formal learning more generally, in responding to the risks to young people from different forms of extremism. Alongside each section, there are questions to aid critical reflection and help you think about the best way to apply these ideas in your context and with the young people you work with. The pack also includes a number of case studies (showing how some of these techniques have been put into practice) and tools and practical ideas you can implement in your own work.

Additional material

This new resource includes additional exercises and tools that youth workers can use together with young people to explore a wide range of themes including identity, values, intercultural understanding and diversity, belonging and community and conflict resolution.

It also includes inspirational case studies which highlight some of the approaches referred to in the main resource such as active citizenship, mentoring and peer education.
