This newsletter is born with the purpose of informing and involving social workers, youth leaders and trainers in a renewed strategy for increasing the quality and creating synergies between the SALTO instruments devoted to educational tools: the Tool Box and the Tool Fair. The final purpose of this strategy is to improve the quality of educational tools and, by doing so, contribute to the recognition of non-formal education.

After years of experience the Educational Tools Strategy aims to consolidate, take stock of achievements and improve the quality of the Tool Fair and the Tool Box. 2010

The Toolbox

Following the outcome of an internal technical and the some "qualitative" changes:

  • Limited the choice of topics;
  • Define the profile of the "uploader";
  • Define when, where the tool has been created;
  • Define the geographical area and the YiA action of development of the TOOL;
  • etc

This Newsletter on Educational Tools

  • For informing and involving social workers, youth leaders and trainers in the process;
  • For debating and discussing the accumulated experience on educational tools and the challenges of quality and recognition linked to them

The 5th Edition of the TOOL FAIR

The TOOL FAIR in Venice will be the place where to "implement", "test" and "taste" the outcomes of the process so far and launch further discussions, and shape the further development of the educational tools strategy for 2011.

-------------------

For 2011

The second year will normally be oriented to the generalisation of the lessons learnt during the first year for the further development of the TOOL FAIR and TOOL BOX.

The concrete actions are to be discussed and decided with the all actors concerned but among others they could include: the further improvement of the tool box according to the identified quality criteria and eventually through a new "organisation", the dissemination of the outcomes through a publication, the articulation of a steering group for supporting and further develop the whole strategy...

Quality Development

-------------------

In this section we will try to develop Quality Criteria which can contribute to improve the Educational Tools: its design,documentation and implementation. This is not an obvious exercise and we would like tocount with the input andopinions of everybody. In this first issue we startby trying to "define" Educational Tools.

-------------------

An educational tool could be defined as

... An instrument to transfer and implement educational objectives into a practice which engage participants in the learning process. An educational tool should self sustain.

This means that it should shape a, might be short, but complete learning process. It can be a simulation exercise, a creative workshop, a role-play, an outdoor activity... with its theme, techniques, target group, materials, timing, evaluation and tips for its further use. Transferability is indeed one of the inherent characteristics of any educational tool.

Mandala of the Perfect Volunteer

Background

This tool was designed for the workshop on Voluntary Work in the EVS pre-departure training course as a way to enquiry volunteers about voluntary work and introduce relevant concepts related to the subject through artistic expression.

Aim

Make future EVS volunteers reflect about voluntary work and introduce relevant concepts related to the subject through artistic expression in order to promote discussion and debate.

Objectives

  • To explore and discover the concept of voluntary work in its complex construction and deconstruction, starting from the perception of participants and their personal identities, environments and realities.
  • To raise awareness among participants about volunteering as an option for active participation in civil society.
  • Promote self-reflection and learning of the concepts behind Voluntary Work.
  • Encourage discussion and debate about the topic.
