Overall aim of the training course

To reflect, explore and learn more about the field of Cultural Diversity in European youth work, with a focus on migration

Objectives

• To reflect critically about personal and cultural identity
• To gain a greater understanding of cultural diversity in different local and national realities,
• To gain awareness of Cultural Diversity in today's Europe by learning about the wider geographical and historical perspectives of migration
• To explore ways in which participants can generate and foster a more tolerant society
• To better understand concepts which relate to the themes/topics of Cultural Diversity, such as stereotyping, prejudice, manipulation and limits of culture, migration etc.
• To develop intercultural skills and competences related to international youth projects, reflecting on learning using Youthpass
• To get inspired to carry out future international youth projects through YiA programme and other resource possibilities


Don't expect from this training

• Programme space for contact making to create future projects. This may happen in informal moments.
• To practise skills on delivering methods, but it could be possible to be inspired by the sessions which are given by the trainers and others. There will be an optional space to share practice with peers.

Profile of participants:


Youth Leaders/Workers
• Aged 18 years or older;
• Who have an interest in cultural diversity and focusin on migration as a topic
• Who have already worked (in general) with youngsters in a group on local, regional, national or international activities;
• Motivated to work on the topic of cultural diversity in their youth projects afterwards; From an association that is in a position to implement future international youth projects
• Can be new users of the Youth in Action programme or those with not so much international experience;
• Who feel confident to express themselves in English about this topic;
• Who are committed to attend for the full duration of the course and are supported by a sending organisation, institution or service;
• This is also open for NA staff to act as participants to develop their competences and to utilise their role and expertise

Participants should realise that this training is set up in the framework of NON-FORMAL education. This means that it has an active, participatory, non-academic approach. As one of the 25 European participants you should be prepared to experience new things and be motivated to contribute your personal perspective.

Not meant for...

• This training is NOT meant for people who are already very experienced organisers of international youth projects in an association, unless there is a real need or interest to learn more about the theme.

Programme

It is four full programme days. General overview:
Day One - Group building, reflection on identity and self
Day Two - dealing with the topic of cultural diversity -norms & values, limits, discrimination, prejudice, inclusion/exclusion etc.
Day Three - Historical and local perspectives of diversity (experiencing local reality)
Day Four - Planning action for change
Youthpass accreditation will be a transversal element throughout the programme.


Duration & Location

The course will be held in March 2009, Italy, hosted by the Italian National Agency.


Financing

Selected candidates will participate at the training course under following financial conditions:
- Accomodation and board: costs for accomodation and board are fully covered by the hosting National Agency of Youth programme; other personal costs are not covered
• Programme and training materials: costs for training materials and other programme activities are fully covered by the hosting National Agency of Youth programme;
• Travel costs: In principle, travel costs will be covered by the respective sending National Agencies. Please contact your NA in order to verify this.


Application deadline

All candidates must apply to their own National Agency by the deadline using the enclosed application form.
