In a suitcase are a number of items belonging to different 'migrants'. What can we imagine and learn about migration from these objects?

Aims of the tool

To imagine different migrant journeys, to explore the experiences of migration and collectively reflect on what leads to people to migrate

Description of the tool

Divide into several groups of up to 5 people.

In a suitcase are a variety of different objects. These are items belonging to different ‘migrants’. Ask the groups to discuss who might have been travelling with each of these items, where s/he was going.

Get the groups together to feedback about stories associated with each object. Did the stories overlap? Did the groups associate the items with the same ‘type’ of migrant? Discuss what stereotypes or ideas we have about why people migrate.

Evaluation:
Ask the participants what they felt the workshop told them about migration. Was it easy to imagine the story behind the object? What insights did it provide as to why people migrated?
