Simulation Exercise
Through the use of locally relevant scenarios, participants construct possible responses to problems of racism and social exclusions.
To investigate various possible responses to different scenarios on the theme of anti-racism and social inclusion.
Half of the participants are given a scenario card (so for a group of 10, you will need 5 scenarios). The facilitator can decide what the scenarios will be, according to the needs and experiences of the group.
Everyone stands up and starts to move around the room. The people with the scenarios explain the scenario on their card to other participants, individually, and ask, ‘what can I do?’. After approx. 5 minutes, depending on the group size, participants with the scenario cards will have had the opportunity to ask several people their opinion. Participants without scenario cards will have had the opportunity to give their opinions on several scenarios.
Everyone then sits down in a big group, and participants read out their scenario card and share the suggestions they were offered, saying what they thought. If it is a big group, ask participants just to share the most interesting suggestions offered.
Outcomes: Participants think creatively about different situations.
New ideas are generated and shared.
Possible scenarios (adapt according to the group’s composition and focus)
- I overheard a bus driver making racist comments. What can I do?
- My friends at college won’t speak to people from other countries. What can I do?
- My boss at work is rude to customers who don’t speak our language. What can I do?
- I want to work against racism in my neighbourhood. What can I do?
- I believe young people, wherever they are from, should have equal opportunity to participate in society, but at the moment not everyone has equal opportunities. What can I do?
