Project title Youth NGOs in Media: for Visibility of YiA program
Priority themes
  • Eastern Europe and Caucasus cooperation
Kind of project Training & Networking
Project description General information
This training course designed for 30 youth leaders, interested in communication and particularly - in media. The project involved young members of youth organizations from Eastern Europe and Caucasus as well as European Union, who are in charge of communication or are interested in this field.

Aim and objectives
The training course took place in order to tackle media as a topic and provide an opportunity for those involved in youth work to improve their knowledge on how to promote effectively in media, both NGOs and the Youth in Action programme. Concrete objectives were:
- To strengthen awareness and understanding on the significant role of media.
- To improve knowledge of participants how to work successfully with media.
- To share information and exchange good practices among participants, how to promote NGOs and the “Youth in Action” programme.
- To inform participants on how to produce press releases that are used and how to prepare successful press conferences.
- To equip participants with the different types of communication tools; introduce them to the diverse types of media and its specific requirements (e.g. how journalists work and what they need).
- To create a tool (the blog), that can be used for further communication among participants and other young people from different NGOs, and that will serve as a platform for multiplication of the knowledge and experience - related to the field of youth and media.

Target group
Youth workers, youth leaders, multipliers, trainers.

Main activities
The main approaches we used were: be learner-centred and based on the experiences of participants; take into account the needs and motivations of participants and be open to regular feed-back and evaluations.

Daily plenary, followed by a Questions & Answers session (an introduction to the theme, daily gathering of all participants). The plenaries started and ended with a song selected by the implementation team.

Workshops (participants divided into small groups) provided a platform to exchange experiences and give an opportunity to learn new things in an interesting non formal way; give a chance to check gained knowledge in the simulation that is very much related to practice.

Games, intercultural & interactivity games gave the opportunity to get to know each other better. Games created the situation when representatives of different nationalities had to cooperate with each other; games helped participants to work in multinational groups, to develop in themselves the attitude of tolerance towards other cultures.

Others non-formal evaluation methods helped us to reflect what we learnt, how we felt, how the programme met our needs and expectations.

Challenges and how to overcome them
Some Young people and grassroots leaders who are operating in YiA field are lacking knowledge of public relationship, what makes YiA not so much visible. In our opinion, using media tools support valorisation of the project and promote its value at all levels. It is not a necessary to be a journalist or media person to spread results and outcomes of the project and have good promotion.

Outcomes and results
One of the expected outcomes of the course is the blog, created by participants, where they could share their thoughts on the seminar topic, publish the material from the seminar, exchange their experience. The blog could be used as a tool for further communication among participants and other young people from different NGOs that interested in the public relations of the NGOs.

New career possibilities for participants, fostering their personal development. The participants brought back from the training course the experience and new skills which was directly contributed to the better quality of the public communication of their NGOs.

Tips and hints
The project is also a good example because trainers who run this training, were trained before by SALTO during the long term Training of Trainers in Lviv and Strasbourg.

Why is it special for us?
Project had a multiplying effect. The theory combined with practice: organisation of a real press conference where participants could use gained knowledge and skills. A movie was made where contribution of the participants was very high. The project had a huge local impact: interviews, radio and TV programs dedicated to the YiA programme.

Comment
“It provided both the ability to put theory into practice in the field of media communications and a strong exposure to cooperation for a great number of young participants from a variety of nations.”
