Self Directed Learning in the EVS cycle

Training Course

16-22 September 2013 | CEULAJ (Málaga), Spain

What does it mean? How can you prepare your volunteers? How can you guide & support their learning process during their EVS? How can you help them to “own” their learning? If you are interested in finding the answers – then this training is for you!
EVS is a complex and challenging learning experience within Non Formal Education, not just a mobility program. One of the characteristics of the Non Formal Education is how important is to be aware of our own learning, and learn how to take responsibility of it. It is, at the same time, an empowerment and entrepreneurship experience. Quality EVS experience automatically is based on Self Directed Learning (SDL), which volunteers generally aren't prepared for. Neither are many mentors or the organizations supporting them. Guiding and supporting this new process requires a specific approach from mentors and trainers in EVS cycle, as well as other actors that can directly influence this process. Therefore this training course aims to train those preparing and guiding EVS volunteers (mentors, host and sending organisations, trainers) in the topic of Self Directed Learning within EVS. To explore what does it mean, how to prepare the volunteers, how to guide & support this process to get to a full and rich learning experience owned by the EVS-volunteers themselves. The training is a 7-day course (including travelling days), with the following objectives: 1. To understand and strengthen the practical application of SDL concept in EVS. 2. To promote the support of this process from the different actors involved (mentors, sending and hosting organisations, trainers in EVS cycle) 3. To support the quality of Non Formal Education and SDL taking into consideration present challenges and future developments and programs, also as a tool to face the youth unemployment 4. To promote and strengthen an international network of actors involved in EVS, and support for the EVS mentors. 5. To understand how supporting the process of SDL in young people during their EVS period can impact their lives, opportunities, possibilities and perspectives once their time as EVS volunteers is over. The idea was developed during another training last summer, where a group of European trainers that are involved in the EVS training cycle were discussing the subject of SDL applied to EVS. They were sharing experiences about how difficult it is to explain and support this process to volunteers. Therefore a second result of this training could be to improve the quality of the EVS program, as we will be sharing information and best practices from the different participant countries, and helping to create networks and support systems between mentors, organisations and trainers working with EVS.
