TC ImageBuidling for Inclusion Groups - Outcomes and Impact

The Training Course on image building for inclusion groups led to an increase in capacity building, a number of interesting projects and concrete outcomes. Read more below.

  • Have a look at the funny 2min video compiled by a participant. The theme of the TC Image was 'SuperHeroes': the participants were students at the SuperHeroAcademy and learned to fight exclusion and negative images of inclusion groups...

Image Building Booklet

SALTO Inclusion will publish an educational booklet based on the TC Image course, so that more youth workers than only the 25 lucky ones at the course can benefit from all the positive image building ideas.

The booklet will be part of the SALTO Inclusion for All series of practical youth work manuals. Download or order them here.

Evaluation of the course

When asking the participants if the course reached its aim, all of them (100%) said it had. When looking a bit closer to what the TC Image brought them, we come to the following conclusions.

  • One of the results of the TC Image can be found in the commitment to setting up international projects: after the course most of the participants indicate to be committed to develop projects (3-6).
  • The course also contributed for many to increased skills in Imagebuilding for inclusion groups (4-6) even though some of the people that rated their skills high before the course, re-descended in their score (they got a more realistic view of their skills?).
  • TC image contributed to the participants' knowledge and familarity with the Youth in Action programme. Before the course, the bulk of participants rate their knowledge 2 to 4 (out of 6) - after the course this went up to 4-5.
  • The course also stimulated participants' cultural awareness, as you can see in the graphs with a rating of 5 out of 6 after the course.
  • TC Image also contributed to people's communication skills, especially in an international environment (see graphs)

The course, the methods, its organisation and the facilties were rated very positively as you can see from the following graph.

...and how do they see the impact 6 months later?

As a general practice, SALTO Inclusion is carrying out a continuous evaluation procedure, involving pre-, post- and follow-up questionnaires to study and communicate the impact of the training courses. This has also taken place for the TC Image and following is the summary of the results of follow-up evaluation. A big thank you to all participants who contributed!

  • 100% of participants say that the training had an impact on their work: 13% estimate it as large impact, 60% as medium impact and 27% as small impact. Of course, it is all very individual how exactly the "large" or "small" are interpreted but the positive conclusion is that the training has surely contributed to professional competence of participants.
  • 80% of participants say that the training has had an impact in personal terms which is an important aspect as if trainings are aimed to contribute to competences and speaking of these, the personal attitudes are as important as new knowledge and skills.
  • 73% of participants have developed projects after the training course. There are projects which have already been completed by now, but also both those in application phase as well as some ideas for future projects.

Considering the topic of the training course, it is important that the course contributed to increase of competence to work with imagebuilding for inclusion target groups. When asked to rate their respective skills 6 months after the training course from the scale 1-6 (meaning that 4-6 represent positive estimation), 73% of participants rate their skills now to be on that level. Still, as also mentioned previously here, in some cases, the rates given for their skills tend to be lower than before the training, which can refer to a change towards more critical self-perception, having worked on this topic intensively in the training course.

It is also important that all participants (100%) say they have reused the methods from the training course in their work.

94% of participants have been able to disseminate the know-how from the training within their own organisation and more than half (54%) have even passed the info and know-how more widely, to other organisations.

And it all in their own words, ie some additional comments from impact evaluation forms:

"It was one of the best, effective training course which I have ever participated. The style which trainers used and environment for course was very good. I learned lots of new things so thank you for that."

"The course gave me a lot of confidence to use the media to make my projects visible and I am very happy with the amount of visibility I was given."

"It was inspiring for me. My target group are children from child care institutions and there are many prejudicies and stereotypes about this people. Image building is basic activity hand in hand with integration and with inclusive activities in general."
