Taking account of the growing importance of training offers for trainers in Europe, the Partnership Programme and the SALTO Training and Co-operation Resource Centre organised the first "European Stakeholders Meeting on European-Level Training of/for Trainers".
During this meeting, Miguel Angel García López presented a "Mapping Study of European-Level Trainings of Trainers" in which he identified the past as well as the current offers for trainings of trainers in Europe. The "Mapping Study" can be downloaded on the bottom of this page.
The following paragraphs contain an overview on some current and previous European-level training courses for trainers which are described in the "Mapping Study" as well as on other trainings of trainers organised by NGOs.
Ongoing activities:
This is a long-term course aimed at training for designing, running, and evaluating training projects within the context of the "YOUTH in Action" programme of the European Union. Its main objective is to further develop the European network of trainers, who have the skills and the motivation to develop and implement training projects within the context of "YOUTH in Action". The course is offered once a year and is organised in three seminars and one practical project. The participating National Agencies for "YOUTH in Action" recruit, delegate, and finance the participants from their countries.
UNIQUE R.I.D.E. Unique space for further personal and professional development of trainers working in the youth field
Training is an exciting, but stressful job, where trainers, themselves, are the main tools, who need proper maintenance, too. Therefore, it is no surprise that there is a natural need to have a break, reflect about your practices, get feedback from your colleagues, exchange good practices, develop new competences and reflect about the future directions/professional development objectives. "Unique R.I.D.E." deals with essential competencies to secure quality of the learning process and well-being for all in a training situation.
TOT4_All - Training course for developing trainers
TOT4_All brings together experienced trainers that share a common background (Training of Trainers) in order to strengthen the quality of their youth work and explore their learning outcomes. This 9-day training course entitled “ToT4_All - training for developing trainers” builds on SALTO's Training of Trainers (ToT)1 10 editions assets: its participants. We will bring together experienced trainers that share a common background (ToT) in order to strengthen the quality of European youth work and training.

"ToTrain is ToTransform the Future", Training of Trainers in Intercultural Learning
This training of trainers is focused on developing competences of youth workers to act as trainers, focusing on intercultural education and work in intercultural settings, by using the richness of experiential learning and non-formal education in general.
Up to 100 young and passionate trainers in various age and experience level from all around Europe to meet, network and have fun together. This 2nd Forum will focus on discussing about the quality of training and development of trainers in our organisations.
Trainers for Active Learning in Europe (TALE), organised by the Youth Partnership of CoE and EC
Following the stakeholders meeting in Budapest, this long term training for trainers has been developed as a Partnership activity run together by the Council of Europe, the European Commission and its partners (National Agencies and SALTO networks), in co-operation with the European Youth Forum. The overall aim of the Training for Trainers is to enable participant-trainers to competently design, implement and valuate quality European training activities putting forward the values underlying European youth work. The long term training course is taking place between April 2009 and December 2010 and consists of residencial seminars and phases of self-directed learning.
T-Stey, Czech Republic, November 21st-28th, 2010
This training of trainers organised by the Czech National Agency for "Youth in Action" aims to enable participants that are STARTING trainers, to competently plan, run and evaluate training activities, within the European youth work context (on local, national or European level).
The TrainerPath, Maastricht / Netherlands, November 5th-7th, 2010
The TrainersPath aims to bring together trainers from various student networks for development and gathering of new perspectives and skills related to trainings. The event also focuses on using trainer skills in a more professional environment.
UNIQUE R.I.D.E, Austria, June 13th-20th, 2010
Thie training course was organised by the "UNIQUE" network and by the Austrian National Agency for "Youth in Action". The target group of this TC were experienced trainers in the youth field who wanted to reflect about their practices, get feedback from colleagues, exchange good practices, develop new competences and reflect about the future directions/ professional development objectives.
Training of Trainers on risk awareness, organised by the Bulgarian National Agency for "Youth in Action" in Bulgaria, June 11th-14th, 2010
This training course should introduce trainers to adaptable materials and tools related to risk awareness which can be used in the training of youth workers. It shall also serve as a platform for the exchange of good practice.
Training of Trainers for EVS, organised by the Bulgarian NationalAgency for "Youth in Action", Plovdiv/ Bulgaria, March 15th-21st, 2010
The overall aim of the training for trainers was to increase the pool of trainers of EVS at European level. The training of trainers for EVS brought together motivated young people, youth workers, youth leaders, former EVS volunteers, trainers, mentors to deepen knowledge, skills and attitudes for planning, organising and implementing training courses for EVS. Thus, the ToT aimed to contribute to develop high quality and innovative learning opportunities.
"Unique ride" was organised by the Association of Youth Non-Formal Education in Lithuania in cooperation with the Lithuanian National Agency of the Youth in Action programme & the UNIQUE Network. The training course aimed to provide opportunities for trainers to develop their emotional competence; to prevent the burn-out; to learn ways of constant self - development by using a diversity of methods. The target group were experienced trainers working in the training field within Youth in Action programme in cooperation with National Agencies for at least two years.

Forming or Performing Seminar: Berlin/ Germany, March 26th-30th, 2008
The Forming or Performing Seminar on Methodologies of Training of and for Trainers in European Youth Work was held at the Wansee Forum, in Berlin, 26-30 March 2008, financed by the National Agencies of Austria, Germany and the Netherlands. It has involved 32 practitioners, representatives of stakeholder groups/institutions (Trainers, Youth in Action National Agencies, SALTO-YOUTH RCs, Youth Partnership) interested in development of quality in Training of/for Trainers in the youth field in Europe. According to the data provided by the participants, they had been involved in designing and running more than 60 different Training of/for trainers courses at regional, national and European levels. These activities were covering a whole variety of formats (short-term and long-term), levels (introductory-advanced), topic-specific trainings (human rights education, intercultural learning, experiential learning etc.) or generic To/fT courses.
The conclusions of the seminar are summarised in the "Herotic Document" ("Herotic" because it is a mixture of heroic in nature and exciting in scope). This document is not a final declaration, nor a consensus paper adopted at the seminar. It is rather the first step and contribution of the community of practitioners to a wider discussion about specificities and quality aspects in Training of/for Trainers in Europe. The training course is organised by the NGO "In Stage Organization" in cooperation with 14 other organisations and it is funded by the "YOUTH in Action" programme. The main aim of this course is to enable participants that are starting trainers - within the framework of their youth-organisation or associations - to competently prepare, run and evaluate training activities with an international and/or intercultural dimension. The organisers focus on the priorities of "YOUTH in Action", taking into account the reality of contemprary European Youth work.
This long-term training programme for trainers in human rights education was based on e-learning, residential intercultural seminars and experiential learning opportunities. It aimed to further the quality of training in human rights education with young people across Europe and to consolidate and multiply the achievements of the Human Rights Education Youth Programme from the European to the local level.
This training course was organised by SALTO-YOUTH Eastern Europe and the Caucasus Resource Centre in cooperation with the Partnership programme between the European Commission and the Council of Europe. The training for YOUTH Trainers was split into two stages: The first training stage took place between 25-31 August 2006 in Lviv, Ukraine, and the second training between 11-17 November 2006 in Strasbourg, France. The aims of the course were to train YOUTH trainers in international cooperation and to create a network of trainers within the International Youth Cooperation with the EECA region. The course should finally help to improve the quality of training activities devoted to the International Youth Cooperation in EECA Countries.
TOTEM was a long-term training course of trainers in Euro-Med. It was articulated in five phases (three of them being residential seminars) and included activities carried on in-between the seminars. TOTEM had been designed to support the learning of those youth workers and youth leaders - already experienced in Euro-Med - who manifested their will/need to develop their competences as trainers in this field. TOTEM's strategical objectives were to contribute to the quality improvement of training activities in Euro-Med, to the development of a network of trainers at a Euro-Mediterranean level and to the effective and bi-directional transfer of training experience between new EU member countries and Meda countries.
The training for active Trainers in Euro-Mediterranean youth work 2004-2006 was a joint effort for further quality training in Euro-Mediterranean youth work by the Council of Europe and the European Commission. The aim of this training course, organised in co-operation with the Euro-Med Salto Resource Centre and taking place in five phases, was to develop and strengthen the know-how and skills of 30 trainers involved in projects in the Euro-Mediterranean region.
The three editions of the course, held in the European Youth Centre Budapest in 2003, 2004 and 2006, aimed to develop the competence of trainers in the field of human rights education. It's objective was to enable them to act as trainers or multipliers for human rights education, especially through national or regional training courses organised by partners of the Directorate of Youth and Sport.
In 2004 SALTO organised two training courses to support trainers working in activities addressing cultural diversity through the development of their personal, critical and pedagogical skills. They took place from March 26th to April 4th in Portugal and from May 8th to May 16th in Hungary. The courses worked on methods and resource material for the participants to put into practice in their own training projects, e.g. activities, workshops, small group work, project visits and expert inputs.
The long-term training course for trainers involved in youth worker training on a European level was a pilot project in the field of European training of youth workers active in European Citizenship. It dealt with the Partnership between the Council of Europe and the European Commission, with (training in) non-formal education in international youth work and with a long term "Advanced Training for Trainers in Europe"
