Youth in Action - Quality in European Youth Work

European conference of stakeholders to foster the quality in the Youth in Action programme

From 4 to 6 July 2006, the European conference "YOUTH in Action - Quality in European Youth Work" took place in Bonn / Germany. The conference was organised in co-operation between the European Commission and the SALTO Training and Co-operation Resource Centre, supported by IKAB e.V.

66 participants from 21 countries representing the different stakeholders in the YOUTH programme came together in order to discuss the challenges to develop quality in European youth work and with regard to co-operation in the youth field and in order to further reflect on the concrete arrangement of the future programme. The aim was to make a contribution "to developing the quality of support systems for youth activities and the capabilities of civil society organisations in the youth field" (in: Commission of the European Communities: Proposal for a DECISION OF THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT AND OF THE COUNCIL. Creating the "YOUTH IN ACTION" programme for the period 2007-2013. Brussels, 14.7.2004: Paragraph 1.3).

Quality is a key term in the new programme and is introduced as the fundamental element typical of the programme in the wording of the law itself - Action 4 is credited with a priority role with regard to innovation and operationalisation of this quality demand.

After the official opening of the conference, participants exchanged good practice in the YOUTH programme and identified achievements to be kept in the Youth in Action programme. Some inputs on quality demands of the Youth in Action programme were given, participants reflected on the demands of specific Actions and formulated needs in how to support youth workers and other persons involved to fulfil required demands. As a result of the conference, conclusions were developed in order to strengthen the support measure framework of the Youth in Action programme.
