Developing Peer Training Skills

In November 2006 the SALTO Cultural Diversity Resource Centre togehter with the UK National Agency organised a training course designed to enable young British and Irish people to develop peer training skills.

To be eligible for the training course the 18-25 year old participants needed to have some kind of experience in-

  • peer mentoring
  • organising learning activities & workshops for young people
  • training young people
  • teaching young people
  • organising or co-ordinating club or group activities for young people
  • organising residential or youth exchange trips for young people
  • other activities with young people in which they took a leadership role (either alone or as part of a team)

On the course the 18 participants-

  • worked in partnership with young people with similar experience
  • gained practical experience of designing & delivering a training session
  • tred out different training methods
  • received feedback from trainers
  • were provided with training resources and tips
  • had the chance to become part of a junior trainer support and training network
  • were given the opportunity to join a junior trainer team that will deliver a training course to young people within the framework of the European YOUTH Programme

This course was also linked to the "All Different All Equal" Campaign of the Council of Europe - promoting participation, diversity and human rights through youth activities. By encouraging young people to develop their training skills with peer groups, we were hoping to develop competent junior trainers who are able to continue with training and international projects in the future.
