SALTO Cultural Diversity Workplan 2009
Find here the proposals for 2009. Tell us what you think of them - we are open to feedback, and would like to make sure we develop activities around real needs.
Want to work with us on these projects? We are open to cooperation with National Agencies - just tell us!
Not all the following projects will happen, they are ideas from different suggestions we have collected. Which ones are important for you?
What do you think? What's good? What could be improved? What other ideas do you have?
Tell us what you think by clicking here
1) Cultural ambassadors
Supporting and training representatives from minority communities so they are able to be ambassadors towards the National Agencies in their country, and for the Youth in Action in general to raise the profile of different minorities. They will also support youth groups and new activities in their communities, as multipliers/facilitators. It is hoped that the minorities that we have worked with specifically in 2008 such as Roma and Somali.
2) Intercultural Competence
Linking research, universities and grass-roots youth work. A long term project, combining different steps (working group, seminar, round table, development of competence for youth leaders etc).
The SALTO Cultural Diversity Resource Centre is seeking to encourage more creative approach to communicating Intercultural Dialogue based on activities and experiences across Europe. The main objective of its project is the introduction of the idea and concept of intercultural competence in more concrete way. Through our work programme, our aim is to create a pool of intercultural competence and expertise within the Network that would support the engagement of trainers and university student youth leaders (working on youth work course on intercultural education) across Europe. As part of the research about intercultural competence, we will focus on developing a deeper understanding of this concept and finding a common ground (European acknowledges) as well as to put together all opinions. We are making links between the research at university level, and the implementation of it at grass roots (international youth projects). We are also thinking about a system to link university students of youth work across Europe. The result will be spread to youth leaders across Europe.
Expected outcomes:
o To empower international youth work to take active stand on intercultural matters.
o To support youth work by giving them materials/tools to deal with hard issues.
3) Value the difference
Taking the best practise from the last four years, with guidance and advice from a wide variety of stakeholders, we are offering cultural diversity training on different themes: immigration processes(Portugal), migration (Italy), integration (Finland). For more information, have a look on this page: www.salto-youth.net/valuethedifference
4) Cultural diversity seminar
National Agencies' officers expressed their interest and needs to share more on cultural diversity issues and especially on good practices to work with minority groups at national level with the support and expertise of SALTO Cultural Diversity. A working group of national agencies could be set up (maybe on the model of Inclusion groups) and a seminar organised gathering NA officers and youth leaders from minority groups. The exact format has to be discussed (seminar, training course, in the middle).
5) Sharing and exchanging promotional tools in different languages
In 2008, SALTO published and spread to the national agencies booklets in non official Programme countries' languages in order to promote the Youth in Action programme among minority groups. As a follow up of this project, SALTO will gather tools created by the National Agencies in their national languages and make them available on SALTO website for other national agencies. The Youth in Action network is rich of 31 countries and more than 20 official languages. This richness can be used to reach minority groups in their own language and make the Youth in Action programme more inclusive.
6) Internship at SALTO for 2009
SALTO is designing a work placement programme in order to give the best possible learning experience for the young person who will be working with SALTO. The programme will be based on the European framework for work placement which includes mentoring and evaluation of 13 competencies. The internship's project will be focused on Intercultural competences.
7) Peer education on cultural diversity
Peer education is a key issue to promote youth participation and young people citizenship all over Europe. The UK National Agency is willing to develop the work done on Peer Trainers competencies for 2 years and collaborate with SALTO Cultural Diversity resource centre to focus more on intercultural learning and cultural diversity. The idea is to organise a training course for peer trainers or peer leaders and give them the opportunity to develop a session on cultural diversity / intercultural learning.

Could we have access to the trainer's selection criteria for 2009...?
COACHING GROUP INITIATIVES
(Hugo Lage, 23.08.08 17:18)
hi, I think that the 7 topics are great, specially the Second one (Intercultural Competence) and the 5th (Tools in differente languanges). I would like to suggest an activity (or maybe will be better call it a Coaching GI Plan):
1st. A Seminar for Coachers (Group Initiatives), meeting people experiences in Coaching GI (more and less, like the Working Group of the Coaching Guide). Trying to include at least people from 15 countries (criterias will be arranged, but I propose less than 35 years old and experienced as participants+coacher, both).
2nd.To use the first Seminar to organize a kind of Coaching Training, trying to develop a Working Plan for 2 years: 2-3 trainings/year, in different countries, and sharing experiences trought a webpage (could be the SALTO-YOUTH site, or maybe using Joomla).
The main aim is to arrange a training proposed by the own coachers of the First Seminar, and to create a international tool for engage new GI.

More diversity
(Roy Abou Habib, 11.09.08 23:16)
Is there any activity related to the youth of the world 3.3 because I noticed that Canada could be an added value for the programme due to the diversity they have.I am now living and working in Canada and before i was in Lebanon so I can see the opportunities
Sub-culture
(Lorenzo Nava, 12.09.08 19:49)
great plan, I totally agree with the training for coaches, and something should be done about including 1.2 in YouthPass.
would also like to see a work plan about urban sub-cultures, EMO, Goth, Punk, Football clubs, Political Groups, as signs of identity in urban areas and to support youth workers engaging these groups, or how to .
Youth
(Teodora Koleva, 13.09.08 02:27)
Is there any possibility to provide more opportunities for young people, not only for trainers?
Breaking the walls of the young Europe
(Albert Hani, 13.09.08 11:00)
I would like to break the wall between the West and South Eastern part of Europe by providing opportunities to Balkan groups of young people to make political, social and cultural presentations around Europe. The idea would be that a mixed group (16 participants) from different Balkan countries is composed and than they travel around Europe and make presentations in Universities, Public institutions, Media houses, Schools, Municipalities etc. This group will have a task to design one joint presentation for all Balkan countries.
Later stage of the project would be focused on bringing representatives of youth organizations from European Union to travel around Balkans and meet politicians, youth, poets, …

cultural ambassadors
(Silvia Rossoni, 23.09.08 17:34)
hi, i'm Silvia from Italy and i attended "Building Bridges" training course in Turkey organized by SALTO EECA and South-Europe last week. I have thought about a follow-up with other 5 countries of E.U. and close areas (Albania, Turkey, Estonia, Russia, Armenia) called "Youth ambassadors for peace" maybe we can collaborate to produce something great. We would like starting with a interreligious approach to understand why we are different and how we can feel equal.
Let me know,
greetings
